Yes they are the exact as the window Vin just flat and not bent and riveted to dash/colum support.. I have the one from a totaled Indy to save as a momento. Rick B
As everyone else has stated, the VIN tag under the speaker is indeed a metal plate, riveted to the space frame. One of the easiest places to find a paper tag with the VIN on it is to remove the plastic piece under the instrument panel, and the rear shield to the instrument panel (like you go to change a bulb). You can typically find a paper tag that was once glued to the pieces, indicating what options that part of the car had. It shows a VIN on it.
What does the VIN say on the sticker on the end of the Drivers door? (It's located in the door jam area) This might be hard to read at best. Sometimes you have to press down on the outer clear layer to read it at all, depending on how the sticker has weathered.
Also, it looks like most of those stickers have been removed, or added. The RPO tag doesn't appear to have the clear layer over the top of it, and the VIN tags on each panel seem to be lifting in spots. Looks like someone went to a great deal of trouble to make this a convincing car.

Also looks like it might have '88 wheels, or at least wheels that were repainted.
Another alternate theory- some previous Fiero fan who had a GT, had a coupe... possible issues with one or both, and decided to make one decent car out of two.
I have an 86 that I have torn the dash apart a couple of times. I have found VIN stickers on the steering column, in the gauge cluster, In the dash pod and several other places.
me too.....i have found stickers in the funkiest places. the under speaker location is the best.....BE CAREFUL! the plastic is brittle.
i have had similiar thoughts, as the OP does, about my Mera ......i was wondering if my Mera was a panel salvage and then reinstalled on a different Fiero. with the Mera- the Vin and the Mera Build number are in a sticker (w/ paint code) on the rear lid.....mine of course does not have one. so i started to look at the Fiero part. thats when i found the "steering colum" sticker like the ARKaiser. i think both my doors have stickers and the front lid does also.....good luck.

Well, my opinion is this happened back at the factory... option change, special order, etc.. I mean if this happened PRE-90, then why would someone do all the switching, even down to the GT seats, steering, etc... I think it was born a 4cyl. coupe, but before it left the factory it ALL changed...

And it is possible that it got mis-tagged at the factory. I have seen 2 brand new trucks from GM come to the dealer branded chevy all the way through and all, but come back as a GMC on the VIN with a different engine in it. It happens. It is hard to say what happened in the past, but I would say that the car is legit and you have nothing to worry about
