ICQ is the old school equivalent of AIM or Yahoo Instant Messenger or that Microsoft one, or whatever is in style nowadays. The number just identifies who you are, much like the screen names on the others.

ICQ = I seek you

As AllTrbo said, ICQ is one of the first native clients to support online chat within a Windows environment. It started as an open source project that hard-core computer geeks loved and embraced.
Around 1998, AOL purchased it for over 400 million and it went downhill fast.

Now, a company out of Russia (Digital Sky Tech) owns it and it has become one of the many chat clients available, along side Yahoo Messenger, AIM, MSN, and even Facebook.

It is still one of the best chat clients available, in my opinion, but has been overshadowed by things like Twitter and Facebook.

ICQ, haven't used that in over ten years. It was the fore front on instant messaging. Running on windows 95/98, it didn't even have any advertisements when it first came out. When it finally did, there was patches to delete them from the prgraming. Set up your own message sounds, had alot from the monty Python's "Search for the Holy Grail"

I've been using ICQ on nearly a daily basis.

Use it to keep talk with all the friends I made in Germany, apparently every one there has it.
