I was in Florida on business the other day and while at lunch I spotted a Fiero GT that had been converted into a Ferrari with an older kit. I walked over to it and snapped a few photos. When I came back to the restaurant, one of the guys told me a story about when he was looking to buy a car back in late 80’s/early 90’s, he stopped by a used car lot to check out a Fiero they had on the lot. He took it for a test drive and while out with the car dealer he noticed a “red light bulb” located on the dash. He asked the dealer about the light and this is what he was told. “If you ever see this light turn on, pull over to the side of the road and exit the car”. When asked why, the dealer told him that “this light only comes on when the motor is about to catch fire”. The dealer went on to say “Pontiac was experimenting with a new motor for these cars. The new motor is made of aluminum and has aluminum heads/intake. When the motor gets hot, the fuel injectors get loose and have been known to “fall out” of the intake manifold and spray gas all over the hot motor. The fuel will catch fire and the light is there to warn the driver that the injectors are getting ready to come out”. My friend told me that they drove back to the dealership, and the whole time he kept his eye on that light. In the end, he decided not to buy the Fiero.
Now I have heard a few stupid tails about our little Fiero’s but this has to be the dumbest story ever. I don’t even know if I believe that it ever happened. Anyway I had to share.
Cheers
Rob

Stories like those are why making things super safe is causing issues with natural selection. The stupid are living to reach breeding age in record numbers. Idiocracy anyone? , but seriously wft is wrong with some people actually believing this crap.
HausFiero is right. It was a yellow 88, T-top, lumbar seat, 5-speed, and power steering and it was after Fiero went out of production. Last one of its kind off the line.

I actually heard a "fire" rumor not too long ago that was pretty bad too.
Some clerk at a parts house insisted that all fieros caught fire because the low quality speakers would fall apart, get hot, and then burn up. He then went on to add that this somehow ruptured the fuel lines turning the car into a death trap. I seriously don't know where some people get these ideas.

What's with people thinking rear engined cars are unsafe as well? I have had a few people doubt the safely of my car when I tell them it is rear engined.

Ask them if they've ever ridden on the city bus. And also, the Fiero isn't rear engined. It's mid engined.

scary thought, morons such as the one with the speaker vendetta, actully drive cars in the first place, kinda makes me scared to take my fieros for a spin, i guess owning a fiero is a good way to practice evasive driving techniques

Back in late 1981, I bought a '79 Lotus Esprit. The following summer I went to an IMSA race in Portland. I had never seen another Esprit on the road, so as we drove into the track, low and behold, there was another Esprit driving toward me on the access road. I stopped, excited to meet another Lotus owner. Only to have him roll down the window, and before I could introduce myself, he said, "Has your car caught fire yet?" It must be a mid engine thing!

Hmmm... meanwhile they all drool over Porche, Ferrari, Lambo, Bugatti and any number of cars with the engine in "wrong end" of the car.
The stupidity never ends. They gonna stop driving when they see pictures of burned front-engined cars??

In a way such BS is a plus+ If it were not for ezagerated the unsafe, catch-fire BS and the not so untrue under-powered issues, we would all be paying a lot more these neat lil cars.
