Just as the title states, has anyone thought/done this. I kind of like the way the instruments are laid out, and thought it might be an interesting one-off install. Any thoughts?

It has been discussed before, but I don't think it has been done due to the complexity of interfacing the gauges and BCM with the rest of the car. Something to do with the BCM missing certain inputs from the car. I believe that Forum member Cajun has a bunch of info on the cluster. //www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum2/HTML/105758.html
Would be a cool dash swap if you could get it working.

I might persue it further, as I know of a mint 98 that I am pulling the 3800SC out of. I may go ahead and tear into the dash and see what I can do. I can get everything fairly cheap, 25-30 for the whole shooting match, so I wouldn't be out much if it didn't work.
