theres an old lady that lives about 30 miles away from me and she has a 1983 mustang with the 2.3l turbo with a 5 speed. she said she'd give it to me if I just tow it away(clear title) she said it just quit workin one day. One question is does anybody know about the 1983 svo mustang? thats what I assume it is because I'ts a hatchback. I looked up the # of cars made and it said that only 604 were ever made! I havent seen the stang in person so hopefully the mustang is an svo. another question I have is - were there any other models of mustangs that they put the 2.3L turbo in, in 1983? Also, How much are they worth?
P.S. the same lady giving me this is the same lady that gave me my 86 fiero se. She's a sweet old lady. thanks for the replies, matt
EDIT: it is a mustang turbo gt and thats what I was looking at to see how many were made which was 604. I just thought it was an svo but they didnt come out till '84 ------------------ proud owner of an 86 fiero se 2.8 v6 4 spd. it helps that it was free

I don't know much about the SVO Mustang, other than it was a decent looking car (loved the inset headlights & the scoop). I believe the late 80's Thunderbird turbocoupe also used a turbo 2.3......not sure if they are the same exact motor, but I imagine they are. The SVO was the only Mustang to get the turbo 2.3.
I drove a '76 Mercury Bobcat (upscale Pinto) in high school and it had a 2.3 engine in it and I always entertained the thought of dropping in a turbo 2.3 one day (never happened, but it would have made a fun car!).
I would start with the 3 basics......spark, air & fuel. Check each out to see which one isn't showing up to work. It might be something very simple and cheap!
Good luck.....sounds like a fun project (and the price is right too).
Lucky! I got to work on one of these in high school (collison repair) that was a fun car. And if you get it, you wont run into another one. I am pretty sure that the 2.3 Turbo only came in SVO Mustangs.
EDIT to add that the SVO mustang was only made 84-86.
The only Mustang with it was the SVO. If I remember right, Escorts had a hot rod model that used it too if you need to find parts. I think also only the SVO Mustang, and all of them had the offset bulge in the hood...makes them easy to spot. Theyre the same as Mercury Capri, but dont remember if they put them in any Capri model.

I don't know of a 1983 Mustang SVO. 1984 was the 1st year for the SVO. They did make a Mustang Turbo GT in 1983. This car is very different from the SVO. I believe the car you are looking at uses a blow-through carb turbo-setup where the later engines are fuel injected.
I don't know anything about the blow-through carb setup. The fuel-injected 2.3 came in the SVO, turbo Thunderbirds, and the Merkur XR4Ti.

Yeah, check the year. 1984 were the SVOs. Not much in the way of worth, other than personal, in a turboed '83. Now, an '84 SVO will only go up in price as time goes by. But, it is still an early 80's Mustang. Not much in the way of performance. Pretty car though. The Fox bodies ran from '79 to '93, an a lot of parts are interchangeable throught the years. Large aftermarket support also. Good luck on the acquisition.

Not trying to be the Ford basher here, but I owned a 79' mustang pace car with the 2.3 turbo and it had the blow through carb. It was absolutely horrible to drive, uncomfortable, and got bad gas mileage. It had the worst turbo lag of any car I've ever driven, however it was pretty fast. I outran a northstar sts in it once. Only problem was you literally had to put your foot on the floor and never let up to get any speed out of it. It was about like driving an escort otherwise.
It's a 16 second mustang.... It has a little bit of aftermarket support, but its costly (esslinger racing) to make any "real" power out of it. It's capable, just not really that reliable.

There is a guy in my local car club that has one. He does quite well with it. Here is the link, you may get a response not sure. BTW you will have to join the club. No money, just have to sign up on the forum. good luck.
For what it is worth the SVO is a very special car and is just now gaining ground with the collectors. In the futrue the value should rise with these cars.
Few were sold as they were the most expensive Mustang of the era. You could get a GT with similar perfromace and build it up for less money than the turbo 4.
This was not the same engine as the GT or Pace car. It pretty much was the Turbo from Europe and later used in the T bird.
You will never retire on it but it may gain collector status just below a Shelby in the future. It is just not old enough yet. Like the Fiero once it gets older it will help and the fact it is a Mustang alone will make it retain good value.
I rank this car with the Turbo Trans Am Buick Turbo pace car as one of the sleeper collector cars of the future. Same for the Buick T type, Monte Carlo Turbo [if you can find one still running] TA notchback and 2+2 GP. All were rare back then and will be even more rare today once the cars of the 80's come into demand.
Was the SVO the one built by Mclaren? I ran across it looking for TGP info. I'm a Ford tech,I'll be glad to dig through our old manuals and see if the SVO manual is there or any info on it. We still have manuals in the attic going back to the 70's,some have been ruined, misplaced or taken though so no guarentees. PM me and I'll take a look when I get a chance.
I owned a 1985 Mustang with the trunk. It had the 4 cylinder engine in it... I blew the bearings doing 360s in the parking lot.. Work on the car a lot including freeze plugs... but it wasn't a turbo.. Not sure how to help you cause I don't know the car you're describing.

thanks for the replies guys(except Monkeyman and IMSA GT) I was just trying to get some feedback on the car and since we are all fiero lovers on here and for the most part seem to "respect" each other I felt it was the right place to ask about this. I usually dont get very many responses in the O/T thread otherwise I would have posted it in there. I myself am not a ford guy so I dont know ANYTHING about fords. so thanks to the people that were giving me some honest answers . thanks for being big jerks "Monkeyman" and "IMSA GT" you really made my day. I hope being jerks made yours.

There are so many Ford forums, I tried 4 Mustang-specific forums before I found one that didn't bash me for putting a Chevy 350 in my '89 Mustang, which I still have. It's www.mustangforums.com.
Isolde, try OKDHM.com Oklahoma deadhorse mustangs is a pretty big forum with people from all over, and I know for a fact a few of the bigger players have chevy engines in their mudstains.
