I registered up with AZFieros and it seems as though, I could be wrong, but no one from AZ is pushing for events that show off our love of the Pontiac Fiero. So I'm interested if anyone from Arizona and surrounding states would like to put together an event. I would like to do a street rally. Now for those not familiar with a street rally I will explain.
A street rally is driven on public roadways and all participants must obey all traffic laws and speed limits. With that said the rally consists of check points to challenge your driving ability, navigational skills, and mechanical skills. Each check point your time is recorded, the idea is to complete the "course" averaging 61 mph. With our high way speed limit at 75 mph this can easily be done without breaking any laws although the 61 mph is to compensate for parts of the "course" in which the speed limit is less than 75 mph. The times can be adjusted to each leg of the rally to allow completion at safe speeds. At each check point the mileage on the odometer is also recorded and matched to the time so if you get lost, and decide to "push it" a bit to make your next check point time it will be discovered and points will be deducted for "spirited" driving. In a rally getting to your destination too soon is just as bad as getting to your destination too late. To get extra points a series of challenges will be presented, in example "Go down xxxxx street and add up all the numbered mailboxes, write down your total here _______".
Usually the entry fee is minimal and only pays for decorations "i.e. stickers that are applied to the vehicle temporarily to let onlookers notice the rally and a cookout that is normally at the end of the rally". There aren't normally any "prize money" for coming in first, second, or third but some type of trophy is normally awarded and like always, there are bragging rights!
Rally's have been given a bad name since rally's like the "Cannonball", "Gumball 3000", "The Great American Run", and the "Bull Run" have been completed on American Roads. It must be said that many participants that enter these rally's were rich speed seekers. Those rally's that I mentioned have entry fee's of $10,000 or more, many of the participants drove in cars that cost more than my house and were only involved to get a rush. To make matters worse SPEED channel has created a reality T.V. show called Bull Run where participants "race" their cars around the United States attempting for the best time. This is not a rally and in my opinion this is an illegal event and the producers should change the rules.
I can't afford speeding tickets, and that is not what rally's are all about. So anyone interested in participating, creating, or volunteering for a true legal rally please respond to this post or PM me!

I would drive from El Paso for such an event. I have always wanted to do something like this type of Rally. Not really a speed event rather a skill event. I say go for it....

I will go for it Katatak LOL, but first I need help planning the event and creating the rules and finding volunteers to sort of referee the event. Would you be interested?
Also, I posted this in the wrong section, I meant to put it under events. I tried to transfer it but was denied access to move my own post! Does anyone know how to move a post? I'm new to Pennock's Forum.

so your tellin me that the challenges won't be anything like the Bull Run reality series? No, drivin through a parking garage like an auto-x course and ending with a giant explosion on the roof? WHAT!?!? J/K J/k this sounds like a lot of fun. if i can get both cars up and mechanically sound by the time of the rally I'm definately interested!

Well Neolithic Shadow, as far as the explosions can't promise anything Ha Ha, we are driving Fieros! Gotta keep that rumor alive. I was driving my '88 GT with a buddy of mine and he wouldn't shut up about Fieros and engine fires. So I asked him, if this car was to have an engine fire and the next turn off the road was a gas station, should I pull in? That kinda shut him up.
It could also be done like the infamous "Scumball" (a play of words from the gumball). In the Scumball their checkpoints were gas stations, they had to go in and buy like some gum or something and on their receipt was the time they bought the gum. They'd use it as a time slip. That would cut down on volunteers to run the event but we wouldn't be able to check to make sure the participants were abiding by the "do not speed" rule.

the gas station doesnt sound like a bad idea because you can re-fuel while attaining your time slip essentially, but does that also mean we get to cut people in line inside that gas station in order to keep our arrival time as accurate as possible?

Ok, looks like I'm getting some help for this Fiero Rally or whatever it will be called, but first the root. None of course finalized but I'm thinking along the lines of this: Day 1: Tucson, to Phoenix, to Las Vegas, stay in Las Vegas that night. Day 2: Las Vegas, to Grand Canyon, to Flagstaff, back to Phoenix, back to Tucson. Entry fee would include hotel in Vegas and diner in Vegas but still trying to keep the prices down. I've found some hotels offering group discounted prices, Sahara Hotel is offering rooms starting at $28 a night for a group, although I'm sure by the time I get all my eggs in one basket it might be a little more. I believe I've stayed there before and it was decent. And I've found some buffets for $20 and less. So, I'm doing my best to keep the price down.
Basic outline day one is 418 miles, if we use the rule of thumb at averaging 61 mph that means the trip would take about 7 hours, more like 8 because of gas stops and challenges and buying sticks of gum for time slips. Day 2 would be about 624 miles which would be like 10 1/2 hours of road time. Maybe just ending in Phoenix since I'm guessing most people will come from that area. So that route would need some adjustment and I personally would like to actually stop and see the Grand Canyon for a bit before hitting the road again. Seen it before but its nice to stretch your legs. Like I said, nothing is in stone yet. But I'd like to keep the price of entry under $300, and I'd like to keep it only two days long that way it can be done on a weekend. I want to shoot for June but I will need some help of course.
Unfortunately my buddy who really wants to help me out with this is most likely going to be my navigator, since he owns a Lotus (Lots Of Trouble Usually Serious) he wouldn't be able to enter his car. But that means neither of us can have a say in the finalization of the course. So if your not interested in joining the Rally or don't have a Fiero and want to get us Fiero guys lost LOL, please PM me on how you can decide a course.
This is key though, I'm looking for business support. I want this rally to be as noticed as possible and this is a great opportunity to get your business noticed. If you have a business and want to donate decals of your business we will put them on our cars and advertise for you. I can not accept donations at this time but after I work out the legalities donations may lead to larger decals and more notice. I would prefer to advertise Fiero based businesses over everyday run of the mill business to show support for the ability of parts and modifications for this car. That way anyone who is thinking about buying a Fiero and knows nothing about it understands we do have plenty of parts availability even today. Please remember that the decals also have to come off the cars as well.
But as a show of hands I'd like to know about how many people are interested in this event so I can get a clearer picture on cost.

We have been trying to set up events every month. The website has been kept up to date, and galleries are being added all the time. Including the ones from past events.
Let us know how this all goes along, sounds like an interesting event, but I think more research should be done on this.
