We match ported everything smooth (using the gaskets as a guide) and actually LOST hp! The tumble effect created by the rough casting seems to work rather well. LESSON LEARNED; Flange the port but stay out of the pitted casting area of the runners,,,

I recently ported my heads. I found that there were a few books on the subject and I read them and still messed up the first set. But I learned a few critical things. Maybe there are others out there that can add to this list:

1. NEVER port match the exhaust. (oops)
2. Port match all intakes (and I did the coolant to lower intake) but only go about 1/4" into the casting.
3. Remove material from the inside of the short radius of the exhaust and intake between the valve and the head opening. Lots of details in this area make the difference between HP gain and HP loss. That's one of the reasons a good port job is worth some good money.
4. Round off sharp casting and machinging edges but never get closer than 1/8" to the valve seal.
5. In general keep it rough. The surface is important and when in doubt, keep it rough. There are a few areas that can be smooth but not as many as people think. I groud out my intake ports with some high grit material and made sure that the surface was still rough.

Those are some basics I learned. Not a high performance motor. That takes more detail.

You can port your heads but you'll still be quite limited on the Fiero V6 due to the intake system. If you've removed the lower intake manifold you will see that the injector boss is right in the right in the manifold port exits. If you look at the upper plenum the area where it meets the middle plenum that is quite restrictive too. Then if you look at the area behind the throttle body it too is narrow and restrictive. You can open up these areas some but not greatly. My observation is that the main flow problem is in the plenum and manifolds not in the head. An investment in the Trueleo and/or a turbo should help you get around many of the flow restriction problems.
