ok got in a bit of a disagreement with a guy yesterday and he said that our little cars will blow up if you get hit in the rear end. this is not the first time i have heard this more then once. i try to explain that was the 84 that had a problems with the fires but that was fixed. so is the above statement true or not. to be honest with you i dont care i am going to keep driving it but i jsut want some clarity on this

I think people confuse it with another car, don't remember the name.

For some reason people seem to think the gas tank is in the rear, and don't believe when you tell them its between the seats.

Ford Pinto.

At the shows I run into the usual random guy that asks "didn't those catch fire?", but most of them seem to believe me when I tell them where the gas tank is and what really caused the fires.

Yeah I think you would have to hit a Fiero hard enough to totally annihilate it not to mention probably kill everyone inside before you would rupture the gas tank.

Whenever someone says something like "Don't those burn down/blow up?" I seriously tell them "Yeah, mine's burnt to the ground three times but I like it so much I rebuild it". After the pregnant pause I say "No they don't, but some people think that."

If they continue with "I heard" I just tell them that "I know" and if they want the facts I would be happy to share them. Most people do want to know the facts.

I will admit that the best car fire I ever saw was a Fiero.........

I ran out of gas last week and called CAA to bring some. The driver who came told me that i was wise to swap out my 4 cyl because he's towed a lot of them over the years that burned, "nothin' left but a pile of plastic."

I just smiled and said thanks.

ya only thing that i could even think of was getting hit extremely hard in the rear to were it crushes the fuel lines. i know that would be realy hard to do but it might be a possiblity. o well i dont care what people say about our cars i just wanted some more ammo to fight back with the stupid people just to tick them off cause they will find out that they are wrong

Sadly any car can blow up if hit hard enough Now fiero's, I have talk with a few folks that owned a fiero and they have caught fire! I think 84 fiero's where recalled due to a fire problem. Pinto was a get car till about 80,000 miles then rust and transmission problems. Pinto was my early childhood family car so the Pinto has a permanent fond memory in my mind

I think Crown Vic's are more likely to catch fire than a Fiero.A lot of cops complained about them.

some people just dont get with the program and want to put everything
down dont ask why but they do. now if someone says anything about
bad craftsmanship or that the engine will kill you in a head on collision
they are seriously ill. GM knew what they were doing and built a car designed
to perform its task. some people tell me its crazy to put the gas tank in the middle
because it will kill you if it breaks. now if you get hit that hard your dead before the
gas tank even gets touched.tell them their cars are the dangerous ones because the
windows shattered and exploded everyone in the car in every accident
theyll just shut up usually

I knew a guy whole rolled his Fiero multiple times in a crash, he was bruised but no fire. Crashes rarely cause fires, if a car is upside down or something maybe and gas somehow runs out, but most tanks have a blocker for that.
What usually burns cars is electric wires sparking near something combustible, or hot oil from oil leaks on top the engine, oh and gas leaks from rotten rubber lines or carb gaskets on the engine..

Anybody remember a while back when a fiero got hit by a semi truck and got stuck under it and the fiero was dragged so many feet or miles and I think the fiero driver walked away with very minor or no injuries I’m sure someone here has the pics? That should say right there how safe the car is also there was a member here whose car went down a mountain with him in it I think it was caught on film? I don’t remember his car blowing up. then again i might be wrong about all of this?

Blew up? I doubt that very seriously, or you wouldn't be here to post. As a stickler for the meaning of words, let's define the terms and make sure we know what we are talking about.

Shockwave posted a video of a Pinto catching fire, or, if you prefer, bursting into flames. It NOT exploding.

This is an explosion:

I have seen a car catch fire. Unlike the Pinto fire, the car didn't start to burn until it stopped moving. The process was rather slow, and
the driver, who was wearing his seat belt , simply opened the door, got out, and ran away from the wreck.

I have been watching auto racing for longer than some of you have been alive. I have seen crashes where cars lost parts at an alarming rate and caught fire, but I have never seen a car explode. So, if any of you can link to or share video of a car exploding, please do so; otherwise, these are simply cars on fire.

it did, right after the witnesses to my wreck pulled me from the car. somewhere it was mentioned that when the car blew, it jumped into the air. maybe in the police report. i have scars and pictures to prove that. and medical documentation. im on a medical review board to be medically seperated from the military. and yes i should be dead, but since bush owns my soul, im alive. (think ghost rider) if you must know to clarify that this is not just some random f'ing story i made up, i also am suffering from brain damage, punctured lungs, lacerated liver and spleen.

since your from somewhere in florida, you might have heard about it. it was on i65 north of mobile in evergeen. i was leaving pensacola to visit my brother on leave just after i graduated my a school for the navy.

believe it or think im full of sht, but i am me and i know what happened. even if most of what i know now is from medical records and witness's reports.

another person to get clarification on this story is from merlot566jka, my brother. he knows even more since he saw me in the hospital and all that while i was in a coma and not knowing what was going on.

ive said it many times before since the accident and ill say it again, DO NOT STREET RACE!!

I have cleaned up after a burned 84 vette. The gas tank was swollen and I guarantee if the fire hadn't been put out when it was, it would have exploded and caused allot more damage than it did.
