Is anyone else tired of cleaning those honey comb wheels?

Well I sure am and since I am getting older it is harder for me to bend down for any length of time to clean them by hand. I have tried several different sizes, lengths, and designs of brushes and sponges but they all need a lot of manual power and still it takes about 15 minutes per wheel.

I was in the grocery store the other day and ran across a battery powered scrub brush for cleaning dishes. The cleaning head was too large and too coarse to use on the wheels but I bought it anyway. I took it to the shop and removed the cleaning head, the drive adaptor and the roll pin to get it down where I could work with it. I made a cone shaped adaptor to fit the drive shaft and put a slot in it. I cut some 1" X 2" foam rubber into triangles and stock one on the adaptor.

Could not beleive it the foam conformed to the wheel shape and by just tiping the tool it would follow the inside if each section by itself. Since the end is pointed and covered with the foam it works just as well inthe smallest of sections.

I wanted to show some pictures but I keep getting the message 13 not compatqable or something like that.

Can someone post some pictures for me?

Thanks Ray

Here we go. Interesting idea. I think it's worth a shot.

I tend to be able to get them reasonably clean with just a long bristle car brush. It is one of those square, brick brushes. The bristles are soft enough (it is an auto brush for car washes) but they have some stiffness to them and will push in between the honeycomb. I can scrub each wheel in about a minute and get most of the brake dust off. It's good enough for non-show quality cleanings, and you would only really know it wasn't perfect unless you got close (BTW, I am running gold 88 rims too, and the dust is noticeable when dirty).

Other than that, I have a soft cone shaped cleaning tool, with a cottony covering which I can use for more detail. It takes a little more time to do each wheel.

I am not sure there really is a much better solution.
