I found an 86 SE V6 4 speed near me for $500. It is identical to mine except for color. Ad says it's stuck in second gear but the shifter moves freely. You think it'a a cable clip? If it's still available I'm probably going to buy it anyway.

Could be a cable issue, or the linkage iside the tranny could have come apart.
I've seen both.

Sounds like a good deal, try shifting at the tranny and you will know right away if its bad or not.

Here is exactly what the listing says. I don't know if the car is still available. It's about an hour and a half from me.

Rust free 86 fiero, it has a 4 speed manual transmission but for some reason i can get it to come out of 2nd gear but i have free flowing motion with the shifter knob. The motor has 138k miles on it and for a fiero and runs pretty cool in summer time, this car does have A/C that needs to be recharged and this car has power windows and power locks. The car is a blood red thats all original all place that has a little bit sun faded is the spoiler but you can barely notice it.

I don't know if he means "free flowing" like the shifter moves but it has no gates. I know what a shifter feels like when the selector cable comes loose but not the shifter cable.

If the shift cable is broken it will let the shifter flop around.

Sounds like the shifter rail inside the tranny came loose - happened to me, but i was stuck in neutral. Shifter levers worked, but nothing happened inside the tranny. Easy fix, pull the drivetrain apart, open tranny and put the fastener back in.

X2 on this diagnosis. I have had it happen to me.

Jim

You will not be able to visually see the broken cable as it is inside a sleeve, but shifting at the tranny will identify if the cable is broken.
