I normally drive my car on the weekends to shows or just messing with the tuner crowd for fun. I do get 32mpg on the highway, But I also have alot of work I have done on my car, so I don't drive it as a daily driver for that reason. I am thinking about it oh and I have to run premium gas in my car so the 32mpg doesn't seem 32 to me...
So.... When gas hits the $5 mark and above.... Will you store your fiero in place of a daily driver? As in cover it up and put jack stands all around to keep the tires from getting a flat spot? Drain and fill oil, rad. and trans? Sell it/ them? reduce your inventory?
I will use my motorcycle for the gas crunch. not as cool as the Fiero, but real cool on the gas
Seeing that my Fiero is my only car I have to keep driving it. What I have done though is plan my driving better. I wait to get things untill I need a bunch of stuff which saves trips to the stores. I don't drive around just to drive. I shut the car off at stop lights. Anything to save a drop.
Topic: Too much $$ for gas, Will you put the Fiero in a long sleep?
NEVER !!!!
i just converted my 87 L4 to burn cheap propane but it still has the gasoline system so Fiero is bivalent now Propane/butane mix is less than half of the gasprice here .
I live in the 2nd (i think) worst city in canada for gas prices, first being victoria. I still drive my fiero daily, but the 18mpg of the stock v6 is hurting me (mind you, i beat on it pretty hard lol :P). I just put in $40 not 1 week ago (brought me to a little under 3/4 tank ), and im already down to 1/4 tank. I think ill end up swapping something more economical in the ol' v6's place. Probably a boosted ecotec or a N/A 3800, i forget which year gets the best MPG though. Though between those 2, ill probably have to settle for something N/A, so i can avoid buying premium.. The gas prices really put a damper on my plans for this car, just cant afford to have the 400+HP fiero of my dreams... Another option ive been thinking about is getting a 2nd fiero to build up as a drag/autox car, and have a 2nd built up for the best MPG i can get. Either way, my fiero is not going to sleep I'll gut it and do it flintstones style if i have to.

what would you say your city MPG is? Also, what kind of power are you putting out? I hear those ecotecs can handle a good bit of boost. There also pretty light aren't they?
edit: one thing that anoys me is how my friend likes to rub in my face, the fact that he pays like $8 every 2 weeks to fill up his scooter :P We joke that with all the money he saves, he'll be able to buy a corvette in a few years :P

Put the fiero to bed WTF! well... if you only use you fiero on the weekend or you have a V8 swap then maybe. But my fiero with a Duke four I plan to wake her up after a eight month sleep.

i have been wanting a GT since i was 14 and now that i got one from my brother (merlot566jka) for my 25th birthday, i WILL NOT ever get rid this fiero. also because merlot has put a hell of a lot of time and money into it.
i too have to run premium, but my daily is a 08 aveo. but when gas does hit more than 5.25, im gonna hafta stop driving so much. or get a smart car.

Ah, NO. My Fieros average between 25 mpg on the worst, the best is over 40 mpg. All of my Fieros get better fuel mileage that either my Dodge or my wife's Jeep. Nope, if anything at all changes, I'll be driving the Fieros more.
The V8 doesn't get driven very often anymore, I still drive the other one. I get around 24 - 28 depending on how I drive, haven't checked it in a while. Need to do a tune up and fix some things. But to answer the question no I wont, in fact just the opposite. I was going to sell the 84 and buy a small truck but now I will be keeping it till it doesn't move anymore.

I'm one of the prudes who's crazy enough to not drive his Fieros. In almost 3 years of owning my '88 GT, I've put less than 650 miles on her. I've had my Indy since early this year, and I doubt I've put 75 miles on her. So, I suppose the question is moot from my perspective.
My Subaru's a different matter. It lives out on the driveway so the Fieros can hide from the Las Vegas sun, and it gets driven A LOT. But, at least it's got a 4-banger instead of something more thirsty...
My 88GT is my daily driver and will stay that way. My compute to work is all back roads with no freeway and I drive a little aggressive. Overall, my car gets 20-22MPG. I check my MPG every fill up. With gas being $4.50 now, I am only spending $50 a month to drive this car. Even if gas goes to $9, I will barely break $100 a month. Now if gas breaks $10 a gallon, I will finish my VW bug with the Subaru engine and drive it. That car would be good for 40MPG easy.

40 MPG on my old 86 2.5 with an Izzie 5 spd, I think I'll keep driving it. My Ford F150 gets about 12 MPG on a good day. I dont use it unless it is necessary. Might put the Ford to sleep. Joe Crawford Texas

Currently my Fiero is my "wet weather" daily/summer driver. If it's not going to thunderstorm, the motorcycle (Bandit 1200S) is the daily ride. For commuting I get about 20-21 mpg in the Fiero & nearly 40mpg on the bike (it's a bit of a "hot rod" itself). My winter beater (92 Legacy Turbo) does about the same 21-23 for my normal commute.
I've been considering looking at possibly leasing a higher efficiency car for regular commuting... I average less than 12k commute miles/year - so it would be a decently cheap option. Now... when is that Chevy Volt going to be available?

Really? A Suburu engine that'll pull 40mpg (in any chassis)? I'm sure that a 2wd drivetrain would easy it's load, but 40mpg? The only one I've heard of that'll do that is the new euro-spec turbo-diesel! My subies (3 of 'em right now, 4 in the past 5 years) all were rated about 23/27 city/highway... and all held pretty true to that: 2000 Legacy GT w/SOHC EJ25, 1998 Outback Ltd w/DOHC EJ25 w/212k miles, 2001 Outback L.L.Bean w/EZ30 6 cyl, and my winter beater '92 Legacy Sport w/EJ22T turbo-4 w/206k miles.
My 4.9 doesn't do too bad. I get somewhere between 17 and 20mpg around town to and from work. I'm also rebuilding the engine (2.5) for my 84 and will probably start driving that car quite a bit once I get it done. I also have a 5 series BMW, it gets mid to upper 20's average but is much less fun to drive than a Fiero. I really need to get the 84 finished!
Won't change much for me. My 86 duke coupe is my daily driver and the 86GT is the weekend/show machine. They both get better gas mileage than my other vehicles.

My black 2M4 is my daily driver, to work & home for lunch & back. I fill it once every 5 weeks.
Do you work next door to your house or do you just work 1 day a week? Even at 35 mpg, there is really only 8 usable gallons in a Fiero, that comes to about 280 actual miles in a tank. Divide that by 5 weeks = 54 miles a week traveled = 10.8 miles a day traveled = 2.7 miles per trip (4 trips a day including lunch) Wow! You do live close to work.
Oh, my VW bug (Sterling kit car) weighs about 1600lbs, has very little frontal area (the roof is under 40") and I am running the old EJ22 from a 92 legacy. With the 71 air cooled engine, I would break 40MPG on the freeway. I once made it from Ashland, OR to the Bay Area on one 10.5 gallon tank of gas. (Sure, I turned off the engine and coasted for the first part of the trip)
My wife has an 01 Outback LL Bean with the 3.0l H-6. For normal daily driving we get a sold 25 MPG. On the freeways when we draft, we get well into 29 MPG range. We drove from LA to the Bay Area up I-5 at a safe distance behind a mobile home going 80MPH at got 29.4 MPG.
Now back to Fiero's. I still have no plan to stop driving to work or to Fiero related events. I am cutting back to other driving though.

You're doing the EJ22... but not a "T"? I've got a couple of spare (read: leaky) VF11's if you want to play with one!
Gotta love the H6 Outback LL Bean... just picked it up for my wife last month (to replace her '98... that's still in the shop for heads & head gaskets).
I'd love to see how your VW/Subie crossover project turns out! But I'll still be skeptical of 40mpg from an EJ22 until I see it. Good luck!

What? Tell that to the gas pump the next time I fill up! I typically put at least 10 gallons into a not-yet-empty tank!
Do you have an 88 with the bigger tank? I have never been able to get more than 8.x gals in my tank. Of course I have never ran it until it sputters and dies either. Either way, 30+mpg does live close to work.

The ZZ4 doesn't get driven much at 15 mpg of 93 octane. The 88 GT was on a 3800+ road trip to the Dells, NY and back to Florida. My 87 GT will go to the Pontiac show, another 3000 mile road trip. Estimate 25 mpg, it is a lot of gas money for the trips. My daily driver get 30+ mpg.
The Fieros are for road trips.

1997 Fullsize Chevy 4x4_____17 city/17 hwy 1988 GT SBC/getrag________17 city/22 hwy 1988 Coupe 4.3/4T60_______Unknown - still on 1st tank, but already further than the SBC car could have gone.
I have been driving the 4.3 car this week and will trade off with the SBC car. The truck will be parked unless I need to pick up some thing.

My Fiero is my daily driver during non snowy months. I am getting around 22 MPG (on a stock V6 with 144K miles!). I know that isn't steller mileage, but I enjoy it so much it is worth it. Now, if I had a car that I got 30+ MPG in, I might drive that daily and save the Fiero for evening and weekend fun... but I don't so I won't.
We're struggling against the gas prices over here too. We pay $2.17 for a quart so thats $8.20 for a gallon but I would never put any of my toys to sleep. There are rumours the price will go even higher this summer... some say $12.00 for a gallon... but I don't care, I just don't look at the counter on the gas pump anymore... I too have an '86 coupe 4 cyl. 5-speed and live 8 blocks from work, but I drive a little aggresive and have to fill the tank every 4 weeks! I also get asked more and more often if it's for sale.......... my reply is I'll take $4,000 for it (and a couple have even considered it!)
I have a bunch of work to get done on her so i decided to stop driving and use the money i save to help fund my brake upgrade i will drive her again in the fall when i have school.

Nope, but I am selling an XJ6 because of the gas prices. I bought the fiero for a DD as I am off of bikes for about 8months becuase of surgery. My stock V6 is getting ~28mpg and that is not too bad. Look at new cars that do that well, you can't find many, and if you do you can do a lot to a fiero for the cost of a new car.
Nope I will keep driving it, the only reason it is parked now is it is waiting in line for a clutch job.
