I have an 88 with the luggage rack and have noticed that most of the cars do not have the luggage rack on them anymore. Does anybody else still have the luggage rack anymore?

I still have mine! Took it all apart and had it powdercoated. Although i do have another trunk lid with a spoiler on it that will get put on when the car gets painted.

Acually, all of my cars have had a luggage rack on them at one time or another. Including my 88GT and the Indy, neither of which offered the rack as an option!
Look at the pic from Gary's book, I think in 84 about half the cars had the rack as a way to address the small trunk.

Besides helping skateboard hitchhikers I found it useless and changed it to a wing. Did anyone ever actually use it to hold down luggage ? Let's see some pics.

I don't like the look of the luggage rack but they are certainly functional. If you should ever get a flat while your trunk is full of luggage, it provides a way to carry the spare with you. I always wondered what I would do if this happend to me as my Fiero has no luggage rack and only the space saver tire fits up front. Thats a big concern.

If you get a flat put on the spare and take the junk that's in the rear trunk and put it in the front trunk. Now you have room for the full sized tire in the rear. Unless you happen to have really large wheels and tires. Then you have to call AAA because you probably have big brakes and your spare won't fit anyway.

Not so much...but I have given some thought to what I would do if I got a flat. By the way, for those with brakes up to 12" the 93-01 Subaru Legacy spare will fit. (there I go with answers again...)

My car has always had one. I took it off once, and I liked the look either way. I've seen two bumperpads with spoilers and didn't care for the look, maybe the smaller Firebird spoiler would look better?
That's a nice car, what are those wheels n tires? They set it off very nicely.
Here's mine.
Hey thanks for the compliment. The wheels are actually 88 GT lace wheels that i had redone. But any of the 86-88 Fiero GT wheels will fit, the 88's were just the ones i found at a good price first. I had the wheels sandblasted and they used fresh sand for each wheel because the edge is actually left with the blasted aluminum look and the fresh sand makes it look more metallic like, they really glimmer in the sun light. Then they were powder coated black and the whole wheel was powder coated again in clear to give it a wet look. The tires are just BF Goodrich Radial T/A's 215/60/15's, but i wanted to go wider but couldn't find any place that would mount any other tire then the factory specs, because i know 245's will fit on there. I have a set of Eibachs in the garage and plan to lower it this summer to get rid of some of that ridiculous wheel gap.
Yours looks like a pretty nice ride too. I see you added the GT exhaust like i did, so i am guessing you have the V6 as well?

It's a very tired v6 but it works (so far). The exhaust is from the Fiero Store and it just had those tips on it. The car is ok but the paint is a LOT worse in reality than it looks in that pics. It's in desperate need of a respray but other things need doing first, like fix the sagging door!

Ya lets just say that the car is pretty photogenic lol. It is really starting to fade on the corners of the hood, roof, and on the decklid. And the passenger side door is missing the bottom corner, idk how that happened, that's the way it was when i bought it, i have another door skin in the garage but it doesn't match, and if you look really close you may be able to see that someone attempted to make exhaust cut-outs, when it still had single exhaust, in the rear bumper before i bought it as well, i have a Formula bumper in the garage as well along with all the round trim for the car, my only worry is that i will have to do something to make the front bumper trim match. Any thoughts on that one? I was thinkin to possibly shave the trim in the front, use the GT points to end the trim after the parking light and then paint the formula bumper around the reflectors to resemble the bumper-pad look of the front, or paint the bumper-pads to match the car. Opinions?? Anyway it still turns a lot of heads in its current state, hopefully i can baby the paint until i am out of school and can afford to have it painted.

Here's mine. It needs redone pretty badly. The top of the cross bar is faded badly in a few places. Until I read it up above though, I had never thought of getting everything powder coated. That's a really good idea!

I am surprised how often I use my luggage rack. I have a blanket in the trunk, just in case, to shield the paint from the sharp objects I find myself carrying. I've carried: bicycles, large office filing cabinets, large strereo speakers, leather office chair, boxes of various sizes and dimensions, body panels front and rear from a Fiero and even a dog house! I can't imagine what I would do if I did not have my rack. The Fiero is really quite useful with this addition.

I thought i should warn everyone about powder coating the luggage rack before anyone runs out and has it done. Here is a pic that illustrates what happens, the channels become more of a triangle shape.
Due to the heat needed to cure the powder coat, it deforms the bars a bit and they are pretty hard to get back to the original size, it really takes some work, but i think the end result looks great.
I appreciate all the comments and the reason for the question is because I was thinkin about doing away with the luggage rack and have just a plain trunk, without the spoiler, but now I am undecided. I want to paint my car this fall and need to make my mind up before then. I drive it daily and love the feel and handling it has. This has been the most economical and fun to drive car that I have owned in many years.

I have not coated one yet, so I can't say I have had to deal with it. But, if the metal is deforming the solution would be to cure the powder at a lower temp (you have to increase the time to compensate).

I got one, or parts of one, or most of one out in the shed. I think its still there anyway. (dunno, havent looked at it in 2 years, and just tossed it in a bucket when it came my way. I sorta had to take it since it was part of a bulk-parts-buy)
Anybody wants it for free, I'll go looking and dig it out and mail it, just pay shipping.
The rack will tote a cooler full of adult beverages, but not a good idea on my 84--too much heat from that center vent.
JScott--will the full size spare tire still fit--after it's repaired & aired up? Seems like I took a flat tire to the tire shop once and had a new tire put on--once it was aired up, the decklid wouldn't close.

One of the design requirements of the Fiero was to be able to fit the full sized tire in the trunk.
Anyone want a luggage rack that doesn't have one? I have one on my Indy I intend to remove. Whoever wants it they can have it for the cost of shipping.

I had to carry 4 wheel when I got my winter tires. I've put two in the trunk with a strap and two more in clean plastic bags on the P/S seat. I wasn't fun, but got the job done. At the time I still had the rack but didn't even consider strapping a wheel there.

The trunk is exactly the right size for a wheel with tire. You can also fit three wheels, WITH tires, in the passenger seat, it's just a real tight fit
Here is a 1986 Fiero with a stock luggage rack. I wouldn't be without one. I keep a dropcloth and bungee vcords in the trunk so as to be prepared to haul away Saturday morning garage sale finds instead of coming back with the truck. It is amazing what all you can pile onto the thing. I will have to remember to snap a pic the next time.
I like it, I don't think it looks that bad on a notchback. Its also really useful on a notchback. On the fastbacks it just doesn't look right and many things won't fit back there because of the buttresses in the fastback. I've used mine to carry my bike around, I just have to take the front wheel off my bike and put it in the trunk. I've also carried Christmas presents back there, and last August when I moved I carried larger suitcases and stuff on the luggage rack. I just don't have any pictures with stuff on there.
My first 85GT had a wing, but once when I needed to pick up a carton of 28 x 44 poster board at a supply warehouse, I found I couldn't get it into the car. I put it up on the trunk and the wing and sail panels kept it from sliding off. Weight kept it from blowing away, even at 70 MPH.
AND---My new neighbor has a beautiful rack.
Sorry, I just couldn't resist that one. Double sorry, no pics, either.

Or you could just paint it...modern paints are a viable option.
