Hi,

I am new to the Forum & definitely not as technically savvy as most that post on here....I have an 87 Mera, 67k miles, stock Fiero engine, that I may be selling soon(or keeping, not sure yet). I have 2 or 3 problems that I need to get fixed, and I dont know anyone around here who is trustworthy, (and works on Fieros). My main issue is the service engine light is on, and it idles uneven, and also drops out and jerks while driving, especially between 40-50 mph. Ive been told by someone who only ventured a guess that it could be a vacuum hose issue. I have already seen that the chain repair/parts places like Pep Boys, Advanced told me that they dont do engine diagnosis on anything prior to a 1996...and I cant afford the Pontiac dealer rates to look into it, so I could use a good reference from anyone in the area that knows someone reasonable & honest that works on Fieros. My general experience since being in Orlando is that there are alot of shops that will gouge you, especially if they sense that you are someone they can get away with it on. It may be the touristy nature of this town, but in the past I have not been able to find someone honest to bring my car to since I got here. Nor do any of the people I work with really know anyone good.

Anyway, if someone can point me to a shop or someone who can help in Orlando, it would be greatly appreciated! It seems from reading the posts on here that people try to help each other out. Thanks.

You could figure out what error codes you have stored and we can help you from there. Here is a link on how to do that.

What rpms is your engine idling at? When was the lat time you had a complete tune up done, including replacing the O2 sensor?

Thanks for the responses so far. I actually just did the procedure to run the code, and found that it was 42. After reading the description, I am not sure where to go from there, or if that is the real reason why the engine is running poorly. I try to rev up the idle, and when I get it to around 2300 RPM, if I try to slowly get it up to 2500, it is impossible, it just jumps up to around 3000. Which explains why it is hard to maintain approx 40mph while keeping steady on the gas etc. The car is also very sluggish in general. I dont know if these have anything to do with the code found, but either way I would't know what to do next to solve it. So I will definitely need to find someone who does. The other main issue I am having is a pretty strong shimmy/vibration in the front. It actually got worse after Pep Boys did the brakes on the car. I know there are wheel spacers, so it may have something to do with that or a balancing/alignment problem.

I appreciate the info on the shop in St. Pete. It is a bit further than I'd like to go, as far as being able to drop the car off & leave it, something more local would be alot better...but if I dont get any closer recommendations in Orlando, I will definitely check them out.

Thanks for that, I'll check into that shop in Kissimmee. I'm on the other side of Orlando but still thats not too far away. The main thing I am looking for is someone who will be honest, not kill me on just diagnosing the problems, and do the repairs at a reasonable price.

I am Alex, the owner of Carsmiths Automotive. I just may be able to help you out. I will be at the meeting tomorrow night. I hope to see you there and talk.

Hi Alex....

Hopefully you will be able to help with the problems I am having with my car. However it will have to be on hold for just a bit as I will be out of town for a few days.

Just curious, what meeting were you referring to in the message you posted? (Keep in mind I am new to the Forum so I am not up to speed on alot of things that are discussed on here).

I will get in touch with you after I get back in Orlando next week. Look forward to talking with you....thanks.
