Does anyone have a Fiero Store ABS headliner installed in thier car? I'm thinking about replacing my sons. His was coming apart and we fiberglassed it but it was only one layer for extra strenght. It's been out of the car during the rebuild and the other day I was looking at it and it's breaking again and I don't want to make it to heavy but adding another layer on the opposite side.

Anyway, I am wanting feedback on the ABS one and if anyone has a photo in thier car that would be great. It looks like it might be a little different.

Thanks,

Earl R

It's a great product! I have it installed along with the new visors. Breathes new life into the interior. It's also a big timesaver since it's pretty much ready to go. You also don't have to stress about the backingboard snapping in two (or 3) while you're installing it. I also installed a new sunroof interior molding since mine had shrunk some due to age. Here are some pictures.

I have one in the box, have not installed it yet. Just to freaking cold out there! I like it... seems of good quality to me. Time will tell how well it fits and how well it holds up, but it seems good.

I ordered one in dark saddle for my 88 GT (with beechwood interior) a while back and the FS' vendor ACME sent me the wrong color. I contacted the FS about it and they had ACME send me another one. It too was the wrong color. Then the FS had ACME send me a swatch of material to verify the color. It was the correct color, so now I'm waiting again for a headliner.

Due to the poor lighting in my garage I actually didn't notice that the color of the first one was off a bit. I was nearly 3/4 of the way done installing the thing when I noticed it. I then attempted to contact the FS about it via email. I didn't get the usual quickie customer service response (four business days passed) so I assumed that I wasn't going to get one. Then I thought I might as well get the correct cloth from Tim at Fiero Parts and just recover the thing myself. While the new cloth was enroute, and I had already gotten started stripping the backboard, I got an email from the FS stating that the second HL was on its way and they didn't want back the chopped up one that I already had. This prompted me to delay the tedious process of removing tons of freshly cured glue in the hope that the second one would go in much easier and I wouldn't have to finish the first one. After all, I might later be able to sell the cloth and stripped board for enough to cover the cost of the new material at least. When the second wrong colored one showed up I went back to my original recovery plan and got started scraping and scrubbing. Not wanting to get caught empty-handed should HL #3 show up in the wrong color, I went ahead and finished re-skinning the first one. It looks good but I'm holding back on installing it until I see the third one.

Now that I'm done venting (and hijacking your thread) I'll get back to answering your question.

Since I did have the first board mounted up at one point I can tell you that everything lines up almost perfectly. Its a nice and sturdy design. One of the areas to be careful about are the two sun visor mounting locations. One of the three screw hole locations on each side is not located correctly. As soon as you get the new HL out of the box use your visor mounts to correctly locate that third screw hole. Later when all of the blood is draining out of your arms as you hold the thing up in the air while simultaneously struggling to get those $%#@ screws to start in, you'll be glad you did. Also, once the board is up in place be generous with the amount of material that you leave in place as you do the cutout for the sunroof if your car has one. Thank god my HL was the wrong color or I would have had to eat it due to this mistake. I'll be more careful with the next one.

Oh, I nearly forgot the trouble that I ran into while removing the plastic A-pillar trim that runs along the tops of the door openings. There are two very thin and fragile plastic toungs on each side that are wedged into metal clips that are bolted to the space frame. Once you manage to locate them you can use a metal putty knife and a rubber mallet to carefully persuade them apart by banging them in a down and outward direction. I broke off the toungs on one side of the car before I figured this out. I was able to glue them back on with Super Glue but whether that will hold during reassembly remains to be seen. If this thread doesn't hit the archives first I can post pictures of the completed installation later.

I hope this was helpful.

Marty

Are you talking about the gray rubber strip that holds the cloth pinched into the stainless groove that runs around the sun roof opening? If so, where did you find one that wasn't black?

Thanks for the feedback and photos everyone.

It looks like the notches for the sunroof, dome light and brake light need to be cut out. Can you leave the cut out in place for the brake light if you want and will it show? We have a different LED Brake light we want to use so we don't need the large cutout in that location.

Yes, that's the one. I just ordered it and that's the one the Fiero Store sent me. It was the same color as the original.

You can leave it in place, but it may be slightly noticeable if you're looking at that area. Maybe you can just add some kind of backing in that area to reinforce it and make it less noticeable. Cut out a section of plastic milk jug and bond it or something like that.

So you didn't specify a color and they sent you gray? I ordered one and it came in black. I need the beechwood color.

Exactly. I supppose they may have figured since I was ordering everything gray that they would send me that color, but I didn't request a specific color. If you haven't already, you should give them a call and see if the beechwood is available.

I just paid a visit to the FS page with P/N 50157 and it says that it only comes in dark gray. Guess I'll have to give Matt a call. Thanks.
