A fellow Hoosier ehh? Ya i have the white letters out, i really like the look personally, especially when they are clean and shiny. It just upsets me that they don't make more performance oriented tires in white letter, because i would have liked to go a little more towards performance but you don't get many choices when it comes to white letter. I think it will look a lot better once it's lowered this spring.

Interesting topic, my tires have the white letters out and was wondering if i should switch them to the inside. I'm still not sure which way would look better on my red 86 GT. throw out your votes people!

Not sure what I would do today, the last couple sets I bought didn't have the option, but I do remember when Fiero's were new, and I absolutely loved the ones that had the Goodyear Eagle GT's with the outlined white lettering. I'm not saying anything about how those tires performed, that is water under the bridge, but they looked awesome. IMHO.

Matter of taste, and sometimes the age of the driver. 80+ years ago black wall was the all you got. 50 years ago wide whitewalls ment you had some extra cash for something to show. 30 years ago performance tires had white logos. Again it ment something to say about your choice. Any more, what do pro-tires have? I just don't know any more?

sometimes i dont understand people..i mean you DO pay EXTRA for the white letters why turn them in????? so yes white letters out..tim
Two thoughts:
1.) I have always bought my tires at Discount Tire and they have never charged me to turn the letters out. 2.) I have upgraded my rims from the stock 15" rims (with the white letters out) to 17" rims. The lower profile is making it hard to find the white letters at all. It looks as though I am going to have tires with no lettering - which may look better on the larger diameter rims anyway.... Personally, I love the white letters out.
I guess that's more than two thoughts...

I think what thismanyfieros is referring to is the fact that getting tires with white letters is more expensive then getting blackwalls, not the way the face on the rim. And i am pretty sure they do not make white letters for lower profile tires.

My understanding from a former tire company rep is that white lettered tires were introduced to offer another profit index. Those that could afford it were the cool folks so that made it popular and most of us bought in to it. White walls, white/red letters, red stripes, doesn't matter, it was all about marketing and getting a little more out of the consumer.
I just purchased a new set of tires for my wife's Jeep Liberty, all the tire store had in her vehicle's stock size were white lettered tires so yes, I bought them. White letter out. Now, to keep it looking good, she's got to keep those white letters white. White letters are all about show, if you like them, fine, if not, OK. They don't make your car any faster or more economical but if they make you feel better about your ride or yourself. Go for it.

when pep boys offer them at a discount they ARE losing money...after myself and my dad having both worked in a tire factory (Michelin) him for 30 plus years and me for 2 i can assure you that white letters and white wall tires cost more to produce, just because of the fact of the extra strips of rubber, obviously white that are needed to produce these products...so again if you get them from pep boys at such a great deal you are lucky....either that or the tires are just plain POS tires and low quality...remember when it comes to tires you get what you pay for...tim

another tidbit of info...those discount tire racks mostly offer 2nds or what is referred to as blems at such amazing low prices...these can have minor defects such as rubber discoloration to other minor cosmetic defects that dont allow them to pass visual inspections done on each tire before they leave the factories.....again small defects that allow such "great deals" ...just another clarification...tim

Does anyone sell white letter tires anymore? I haven't seen any in a tire shop in years. I like them, had them on some cars in the past, and had some Eagle GT-4's on my Fiero when I bought it so many years ago.

I never liked having the letters out. It just does`nt look good to me. At speed they looked like whitewalls to me. I don`t like those either. I did think the red stripe tires were kind of neat back in the day though. I never bought a set and don`t know if i would now. But they were neat looking.

The only tires that I have seen consistently with white lettering are the BFG's. They always ask if you want them mounted with the letters in or out.
The Firestone Firehawk Indy 500's are only available in the original Fiero size 215/60R14 as whiteletters. When I bought mine I was completely torn over whether I should mount them whiteletters out or in. Ended up going whiteletters in. Now I only see them when I'm under the car.
Out, and I don't care if it's a dated look, heck the car is dated.
It just got a set of Cooper Cobras for my 87GT. Thought I was getting all 4 tires in white letters, not! The rears were, but the smaller fronts don't come in white letters. So much for the picture on their site. Looks like that car will get black sidewalls.
If I could find white letters in both the front and rear sizes for my 88 Formula I would get them. I am sure they would look out of place on a new car, but I think on a Fiero they look fine, even if they are out of style for modern cars. Most modern sporty cars don't have enough sidewall for it.
Problem is... I just cannot find raised white letters in the 205/60, 215/60 sizes.
