So I got a warning for my exhaust being too loud a week or so ago. There isn't a fine up front, but if you don't pass the test within 20 days, they suspend the registration, then when you get it tested and finally do pass, there is a 125 fee for reinstating the registration or whatever.

So, I brought my 3800sc down to get tested this morning and it did 94.6dB. That is with a cat and with a muffler. The guy at the test station said it failed on two accounts. The first is the obvious dB level. It can't be over 80 dB, and the second is that you can't modify the exhaust the system in any way that could potentially cause it to be louder than stock. WTF. How the hell am I supposed to get this thing down under 80dB, lol. I was wondering if people have had their setups tested either stock or with a motor swap and what noise levels they were experiencing.

At a car show in PA a few years back, my 2.8 with no cat/Borla did 101dB. I was surprised this thing was only 94. In anycase, it looks like i may be screwed here as far as the sound. I was considering bringing up how loud a stock 2.8 fiero is, and hoping to just be able to match that dB level. The fiero was pretty damn loud from the factory, but even still I would guess it could have been down to near 85dB-ish. In my quest to be quiet, those last few dB may come in handy.

I guess this is a bit of a rant, but the damn DMV is a PITA. I live in NC 9 months out of the year so it sucks to deal with this here in CT. Also its annoying that there are just as many bikes loud as hell, and cars with stereos that shake small coffee shops when they drive by.

Well, off to weld something together. [/Rant]

The removable exhaust baffle helps reduce db levels by several db points to assist in making the exhaust quieter for various driving needs.

The Super Silencer is the most effective way to lower sound output caused by a straight through racing exhaust sustem. The Silencer has also been shown to actually increase mid-range torque in some vehicles. On avera, the Super Silencer will lower exhaust noise output by approximately 7dB. Available for A'PEX mufflers with 90mm or 115mm tip.

Only idea I have, no idea if it helps or not?

You could always add supertraps on your car. Increase the disks to quiet the car and after the inspection just remove the disks so you don't have all those restrictions.

I only want to know how you plan on running a stock grand prix exhaust on a fiero. That's gonna be a trick I wanna see. LOL

This is what I use. Look under "Specialty Glasspack Mufflers" for the Jones Turbo Packs. The linked page has a diagram of whats going on inside the tube. I use two, with no cat and must say, it is extremely quiet for a 3800. When you go WOT, all you can hear is a WHOOOOSH from the exhaust and a big earful of SC whine. At idle on the road you can hear the blower whistling. PLUS they are cheap! I should try and get a vid done.
