Those friggen gas prices are on the rise again. Nearing record highs, just in time for summer. Anyone ready to scap their high performance engine for a Duke?

Gas is ranging between $2.69 and $2.79 USD for Regular 87 Octane per US Gallon.

I'm really ready to go to my Indy and the Duke as my daily driver.

yeah i think its going to be another expensive summer. that's not even including what might happen in the mid east or natural disasters. the duke might be a lemon when it comes to HP but i'm still getting between 27-30 mpg. if i kept it at 55 or lower i bet i could get into the mid 30's. still pretty sad when it takes $25 to fill up a fiero.

I just dont drive the Fiero much. My BMW gets upper 20's to low 30's for gas mileage.

Well - with the swap I'm looking at, I shouldn't have to worry too much about gas. I mean - I already drive a land barge known as a W-body 1996 Monte Carlo. It gets decent mileage, but the Fiero's going to be better no matter what motor I swap in, assuming I don't attempt a big-block 502. Which I won't.

not that I don't love the little duke. But honestly, my 5-speed 2.8 GT doesn't get much less mileage than my indy 4-speed( GT = 23-25mpg, Indy 23-30 mpg). If anything I am thinking about pulling and parting my getrag / 2.8 and swapping in a 3.8 s/c II for 30 - 35 mpg =/

It's true.. on the highway going to Daytona my 2.8/5 speed was getting better mileage than the duke mated to the 4 speed, (30.5 mpg versus about 29).

But that drops quickly on the 2.8 with any city driving down to low 20s. Still better than my truck at 16.

Time to see some more electric or hybrid conversions. If uncle sam offered any tax credits on homebuilt hybrids I might consider it...

If anyone wants to trade me a northstar wiring harness I'll gladly trade them my weak impersonation of an engine. I get about 30 combined. When I went with my brother to the strip today he had to fill up his RX7 with 103 Octane race gas. It was $8.00 a gallon!!!

Thats why I bought a motorcycle....35mpg is the worst I have gotten and that was all very hard riding. Ususally average about 42/43 mpg. Now my Ram with is 13-15 mpg sits most of the time unless I need to haul more people or stuff. With the price of gas I will pay off the cost of bike, $2000, in a little over a year.

Scrap my N* swap? No way! I'm also happy with the MPG I get from my V10 Excursion (12 MPG city & 16 MPG hwy). Granted, I do use my Harley as my daily-rider when I can (weather permitting) 'cause it gets 45 MPG around town.

$3 per gallon is no surprise to me. If gasoline had followed inflation, we would be accustomed to $5 or $6 per gallon nowadays. In light of that, and what gas prices are in other countries, $3 looks like a real bargain.

Wow! If true then this must get at least 200 miles per gallon!

Actually it would show less miles on the odometer. The larger tire turns less than a smaller one in a given distance and the speedometer would show a couple mph less than you are actually traveling. But it takes a little more power to turn the larger/heavier tire.

Yesterday our government's Energy Minister announced that implementing the Kyoto Accord will cause gasoline prices to rise to Cdn$1.60 per litre immediately.
That's US$ 5.168 a gallon.

NOW THAT'S SOMETHING TO ***** ABOUT

I've got a duke-powered 87, a 2.8 86 GT and a spare (under build) 2.8 sitting here..........and the 2.8 stays !! ;-)

I don't drive enough miles that the duke would save me any more than $50 a month max, and the pleasure of the 2.8 is worth the 50 bucks to me.

naw - I got rid of the duke fin favor of installing a 4.9, not likely going back.

Besides, if I try to drive normally (like that happens ), I do get better milage out of the 4.9 than I get on the 88GT - and way better than the truck...

Other than the slight extra for premium, my 3800 swap gets the best gas mileage out of any car my family has ever owned.

E85 is a fairly "phesible" alternitive to E100, and you can run that reliably with a mostly stock car. the 2.8 and its pcm can support the air/fuel required, but the fuel system would need to be upgraded for high mileage reliablity. BTW E85 is $2.10 here, which works out to about $2.50 comparing its efficency to gas.

Last time I checked my V8 Fiero was getting around 9 MPG. SO I quit checking and now measure it by SPG (Smiles per gallon)
First time I remember paying for gas it was 35c a gallon. You can ***** all you want but in the end you will have to choose. Thats why its a good idea to have more than one.

Ive done calculations ( using midwest costs of materials ) and unless you grow your own corn/potatoes/etc it still isn't cost effective to do it at home, until it hits aabout 5 a gallon.

When it hits 4, im going to start getting things ready.

Thanks

I'm half joking of course...I don't think too many are goint to remove their high performance swaps and put in a Duke...(however if you are considering it I have a couple of Dukes I'll swap you )

But on the other hand, I am ready to park my truck and drive the duke everyday, except when I really really need the hauling power of the truck.

The 2.8 and the Duke are only good for getting it onto the trailer to Archie's for a engine swap, hehe. As for driving a "Duke" you'll never catch me driving one due too it's many issues being a 20+ yr car regardless of what it's mileage.

It does show traveling less miles on the odometer but when I travel with a full tank of gas (10 gallons) to a frequent destination, on the taller tires I can go about 50 miles further before I run out of gas than if I have normal height tires. I have tested this meaning that I can pass several more towns than I could with the normal tires and thats with a 3.4 DOHC with a 4.10 final drive.

Yeh, right ;-)

Give you the keys to an original low-mileage indy, and you'll drive it---and enjoy it.

Same as the rest of us. ;-)

No. It would be headed for a chop shop in IL, hehe. I already drive newer cars that reach 30+ MPG. The problem with low milage Fieros or "garage queens" is.....there old. By the time you've invested countless hours in passing smog, break-downs (more so due to it being a daily driver), and the plain Jane factor...you'd better off ditching the car for a import 4-banger with a turbo or swap conversion.

As for a "Indy" ......all Fiero IMO are fare game for a engine swap. The only reasons for keeping the Duke is due to "Budget restraints" vs. buying a new car. The budget restraints allows a person to justify keeping the Duke due to the high cost of gas. As some have stated, the extra 3-4 more gas per gallon using a Duke vs. 3800SC isn't that much especially if it's HWY miles. Heck my N* get 30+ mpg.

had I opted for a 2wd, I could have matched your milage.

Start rant.
Here's my complaint. Gas stations putting a $50 limit on gas when you pay at the pump. If I run mine low, which I always do. It costs about $65 now to fill it up. I have a 25gal tank. I want to leave with 25 gallons of gas in my tank. And I don't want to have two transactions. It's just annoying.
End rant.

I've never encountered the $50 limit on pay at the pump... must be a local thing in Florida. I regularly put more than that in my truck.

Anybody want to trade their low miles Indy for my ragged out and barely able to move Indy? Maybe I can sell mine to Curly so he can chop it and put a Northstar in it.

My GTR gets about 18mpg driving nice on the highway burning premium gas at $4.26/g. Not very economical but then again its worth every penny

Not sure what my Fiero does for mileage, but atleast my 2003 N* was designed to burn regular gas.

had I opted for a 2wd, I could have matched your milage.

End rant.

I hear ya.

My work truck is an econline f-350, and I burn just over 2 grand a month in gas. If I run it real low, $140-150 at a time will just about fill it, and I do that every second day or so.

My soloution---I stick to small-town, full service places. The ones where the coffee is free, the attendant is friendly and happy to chat for 10 minutes, and will offer to check the fluids, and doesnt act as if me being a customer is an annoyance. THOSE guys get my buisiness, and the corporate maga-stations can stick their gas where the sun don't shine.

One of the best (shameless plug) is Lynhurst Esso and Variety in St. Thomas, Ontario.
