I was re-doing my rear trunk compartment, where I had prevoiusly used foil-backed jute insulation like this:

As the pic shows, the foil side was down (toward the heat), held in place by silicon. To my dis-belief, This is what I saw when I removed the factory gray carpet liner:

Here's another shot:

and a close-up:

Man, if someone would have told me that the surface would get hot enough to char this insulation i would not have believed it ! The muffler is on the other side of the main burn area.

I removed this stuff and made a heat shield over the hot area with (2) rows side-by-side of (3) overlapping galvanized metal sheets ("shingles" at Home Depot) and covered the entire forward surface with self-adhesive duct wrap made for hot pipes. Hope THIS works without catching me on fire (friggin' fieros) ....

You may want to check your muffler and the heat shielding on the outside of the trunk, next to the muffler. Something this wrong.

Something is definitely wrong there; I have never seen my trunk get that hot or a lot of the cold stuff that I used to carry back there would melt. Are you sure your muffler or cat isn't plugged up with crap or the heat shield above the muffler is still there?

The original insulation in the Fiero trunk area was just simple jute padding (no foil facing)
It's not a problem with what insulation you installed, you have other issues with the exhaust system.

Well it could have been worse... (thank goodness it wasn't!)

Here's my favorite 'burned trunk' thread from the past...

Racingman24 coming home from Wheatstock... look at what happened to him
And that was with a 4 banger!

Poor shirt. He never got a chance to wear it! I think CFOG sent him a replacement though...
