I'm thinking about going to some of the junk yards around here and looking for a 5-speed. I don't think there is alot of fieros in the j/y around here (st louis, mo area) so I've been trying to find out what 5 speeds transmissions from other cars will swap into my 86 v6 4spd fiero. I've been leaning towards isuzu since there is more of them and they're cheaper. So please post the years, models, and trim/engine of the cars you know with 5 speed tranny that will swap in. Thanks, Ben
any of the quad 4's will not bolt up, if you had a V6 bellhousing you could swap them over, but since you dont, avoid the 2.2,2.3,2.4L enignes, go with a 2.5 (tech 4) 2.8/3.1 engine. Sunbirds and cavaliers are the best bet for a Getrag. Anything that had a V6 will be a getrag. 89-93ish would be the most common years

http://fierosails.com/PartsManual.html '87-88 2.5L, 5-speed Isuzu: This exact transmission is unique to the Fiero. However, five-speed transmissions from the cars below can be used if the shift arm is rotated 180 degrees. Buick Skylark '87 Buick Somerset '87 Chevrolet Beretta '87-88 2.0L gear driven speed sensor Chevrolet Beretta '89 2.0L trans code DAB or DHB, gear driven speed sensor Chevy Cavalier '87-89 2.0L electronic speedometer Chevy Corsica '87-88 2.0L gear driven speed sensor Chevy Corsica '89 2.0L trans code DAB or DHB, gear driven speed sensor Olds Calais '87 Olds Calais '88-89 2.5L Pontiac Grand Am '87-89 2.5L Pontiac Tempest '87-88 2.0L gear driven speed sensor Pontiac Tempest '89 2.0L trans code DAB or DHB, gear driven speed sensor
Five-speed transmissions from the cars below can be used in the '87-88 four-cylinder Fiero by switching the speed sensor, shift arm and/or speedometer cable. The shift arm must be rotated 180 degrees.
I found the above list of 5 speeds that will work with the 4 cyl. Since the fiero isuzu 5 spd can be swapped into a v6 then doesn't that mean that these will swap in a v6 too if you have the fiero isuzu 5 spd shifter and cables? Thanks, Ben.

I'll check out the cars with the getrags too and see what the cost and conditions are. I found this list on rodneys page for some cars to look for since for these only would require rodneys select cable bracket. Cavalier 87-89,6000 87-88, Beretta 87-89,Celebrity 87-88,corsica 87-89,Cimarron 87-88,Fierenza 87.

if there is nothing wrong with your 4 speed, you'll probably regret swapping to a 5 speed,
i did that to my old 86GT and the isuzu was less drivable for the stock v6, the muncie 4 speed was geared more appropriatly for the v6, gotta remember, the isuzu was made to propel a 4cyl and its torque characteristics.

My 3.2 v6 isn't stock, it doesn't start making good power until almost 3000 rpms (but fixing the exhaust leak at the manifold might bring it down alittle). But the reason I want a 5 spd is the lower 5 gear rpms. I drive 45-65 mile a day of mostly highway miles and I want to improve the gas mileage. Also my cluch need replaced soon so I have to drop the cradle for that.

I think that an 84 "econo" 4speed would be a much easier swap, and you would gain that MPG you are looking for.
From my research It would seem that econo 4 spd is a fairly rair and highly desired tranny. Plus since I still have a v6 and not a v8 I think I would lose to much acceloration with that tranny. The isuzu or the getrag would more of a happy medium.

I'm still wondering if the info about the cars with the isuzu tranny in the 4th message is accurate and I can use one of those in my 86 V6 fiero. So if you know please post. Thanks, Ben

I have a 84 econo in my car, but the thing shifts extremely hard (the shifter itself moves hard). seems to move pretty freely when the cables are unhooked from the trans, any way to improve this??

I'm planning on going this saturday to look around and I was hoping to get this info comfirmed alittle more. Maybe since this is listed on those websites its already comfirmed enough for most. I just don't want to get stuck with anything I can't use so if you know anything about this please post. Thanks, Ben
