Exotic Rida,..................it won't make you feel any better but..............I too lost everything once. I know the feeling. Not only did I lose everthing, I had to pick up the pieces and my life's spirit. Yes, it sucked. Big time. Every so often, something happens which makes me relive the feeling. What has happened to y'all is one of those things. I feel for you. I want you to know....it does get better. Y'all are gonna have to suck it up and move forward. Take no time to dwell on your loss, count your blessings and look for new beginnings. Man, I am sorry.

Seriously the easiest way to get through tragedy is to keep your head high and try to see the lighter side of the situation. For example, no one in that area will make fun of your fiero catching fire will they?

i saw the "hottie" it was completely submerged!! my car also.... basically the whole new orleans fieros were lost!!!!!
It's really sad about the Fieros being lost, but honestly when Rita was threatening Houston I left all my Fieros behind and my only concern was getting my family to safety. The cars can be replaced.

Isn't the "hottie" an 88? If so, be sure to hang on to it, because it'll be a good donor for another 88, if it's not repairable. I hate the loss, but you guys made it out ok, so that's what really matters.

I spoke to an Insurance Investigator Friday who works for Hartford/Travelers Insurance and he says their company would not allow people to keep cars for salvage if they pay out on a total loss and that the cars will be crushed. The reasoning is they do not want flood cars to get sold after the fact in other areas which could hurt the consumer. It applys to cars that might have been totally submerged or just up to the floor boards. Seems a shame so if anyone there has a claim that might be totalled be prepared to see it gone forever.
I do not know of other carriers doing this but if one does it others will follow.
Sorry for your losses. I helped deliver a handicap accesable van that a friend of mine donated to the town of Pass Christian just east of New Orleans last weekend and drove through Hattiesburg to Biloxi and toward the Big Easy until Interstate 10 was closed off for access. I could not beleve the devastation that went on for miles. I hope all who lost can recover. My heart is out to you all.

This is unfortunate. There might be salvagable parts. But I understand the concern, after Tropical Storm Allison in Houston there were 10s of thousands of flood damaged cars and a lot of them were misrepresented and resold with clean titles, (although they should have salvage titles.) They are trying to prevent people from being ripped off, but there should be special rules for collector cars. Most Fieros are worth a lot more as parts than they are as rebuilt salvage cars. Especially for 88s those parts are getting hard to find.

Final slap in the face, when they wanted to total my car and take it I ran them out of my driveway. I hope they make exceptions for those that have put a lot of money and time into their cars.

I'm no expert, but the insurance company doesn't OWN the car. They can refuse to pay the claim however if their conditions aren't met. You would have to decide whether their check is more valuable to you than the parts or the noble act of saving a Fiero from the crusher.

Man, that really sucks!!! Sorry to hear about your lost (Fiero). You'll be back in no time. Just a little detour. You'll find your way back again on a much better road. Have faith brother. I'm glad you made it ok. And nice to see you up in here.

When my '88 got whacked by a driver running a stop sign over Memorial day, the insurance adjuster came over and looked at it and came up with a $1700 repair cost. However there was still risk that when the car got into a repair shop more things would be found and the repair cost would have gone up. The insurance company decided to total the car. The book value on an '88 Fiero is something like $2300.
I got three options:
1) take the $2300 and they take the car
2) take the $2300 and buy the car back at salvage value of $500 with a salvage title
3) take $1700 and keep the car with a clean title
I took option three.
If there were thousands of flood damaged cars showing up in Houston after Allison with clean titles you'd have to think the insurance companies were offering a negotiated settlement with a clean titles to their clients.
The idea that an insurance company won't sell you the car back with a salvage title to possibly protect unnamed people who may not even be their clients seems way too altruistic for an insurance company. I'd think that most of them would jump at the opportunity to sell the car back immediately at it's salvage value with a salvage title. Maybe it's true but if they can't sell a flood damaged car back it would almost have to be some state regulations that prevents them from doing so.
I wouldn't give up hope of keeping the car and I wouldn't give up hope bringing the car back to life - it just going to take a bunch of work.

LOL.! This one had me rolling with laughter. I agree the insurance companies are in it for the money, plain and simple. Not to protect un-named people who are not their clients. It had to have been a local law that prevented them from selling the car back.
I would keep my car and fix it myself before I accepted some token payment from the insurance company. I've already done that once..my 88 coupe would have been totalled by now from the wreck I had, instead it's being rebuilt into a show car.
