I recently purchased my dream Fiero. '88, Bright Red, Auto, Sunroof, everything but leather, with only 22K. The car was collector owned and is 100% stock (yes I still have the extra set of rims and GT+4 Goodyears that are also mint and have never touched the road). I had the car documented through PHS (Pontiac Historical Services) and everything checked out OK except the copy of the original window sticker shows NO sunroof option and the decal next to the brake master cylinder does NOT have the 'AD3' (sunroof) code. Is there any chance Pontiac assembled my Fiero with a sunroof by mistake (any way to find out)? Could the selling dealer have installed it? The car is mint and I have had it appraised by a person who know Fiero's upside down. His opinion was it came from the factory with the sunroof installed. Any input, help or opinions would be appreicated. I NEED to know who put that sunroof in ( I can't sleep night) !!!! Also the car has the sunshade and cover.

i remember hearing that all fieros are cut for sunroofs. the only thing different is the outter roof skin. so under the skin is the opening for the sunroof. maybe this has something to do with your story?
Just for grins, look at the seal around the windshield. The original seal is ~3/8" in width. Sometimes you can even see a tiny gap between the corner of the seal and the A-pillar where it meets the roof (at least on cars that have been out in the weather like mine have.) A replacement seal is usually wider. Probably closer to 1/2". If the roof section had been replaced, a replacement seal probably would have been installed since the roof could not have been removed with the seal in place.

All you have to do is take out the headliner, take off the roof skin, then put on a sunroof skin and put in a new headliner. Its very easy to change over. I would bet either a dealership or a previous owner put one in. I doubt that the factory would have made a mistake like that, hard top was the standard, so my guess is that they would have accedently forgot sunroof rather than install it. But hey, anything is possible. I dont really know what to look for to tell if its been messed with.

Raydar, windshield seal measured .350 using venier. I was hoping for a "smoking gun" to tell who installed the sunroof. Looks like that will not be the case. Any comments if this "unknown sunroof" issue would lower or increase the collector value? Thanks again guys and or gals.

I'm sure your GT is nice and all, but if you are buying it as an investment, then I think you will be disappointed.
There are mint GTs that have nearly zero miles and when they come up for sale they barely get the price that they cost new back in 1988. In other words the person who sat on the car for 18 years could have done a lot better investing in a passbook savings account.
If you want to save an 1988 GT as an example of a nice Fiero then great, but don't expect you are going to get rich off of it.

They did my car and I got the info that was correct. But I had a window sticker done and they botched it the first time. I had to contact them and have a corrected one sent. They made my V6 on my SE standard equipment when it was an option.
PHS does a very good job but keep in mind they are human too. They did make it right and corrected the error by sending me a new window sticker.
Also Pontiac records are not always perfect too.

Free cat!! Good one, although my wife would kill me if she knew why I was laughing so hard!! Thanks for the replies. Keep them coming.
Yep I laugh every time I see that
I did the swap on the yellow car 2 years ago. Other than the Rpo code you can not tell that the car did not come from the factory with the sunroof. To answer your question I DID NOT PUT THE ROOF ON YOUR CAR. Welcome to the forum. My T-top car has 27K on it and it is 100% original down to the tires too. I also payed for that 100% too.

I doubt that the factory would have installed it by mistake, but strange things do sometimes happen. My guess is the original owner decided after purchase that he/she wanted the sunroof. As others have said, it's a simple swap. Would have been even easier back then--you could just order the parts from Pontiac, and the dealers wouldn't have thrown a fit about working on a Fiero, as most do these days. IIRC, the body parts even came painted, so that wouldn't have been an issue trying to match colors.

Most likely the original owner wished that he had a sunroof & had the dealer install it at a later time. It's pretty easily done. Don't think Pontiac is in the business of giving away free sunroofs.
I have a spare "full roof" piece if you would like to restore it back to original condition. :P

Actually it might not be a mistake. I spoke to a few Fiero Assembly line workers before who said that towards the end of the run in 1988 they installed what ever they had left on some cars for the hell of it (ie, I've heard of subwoofers going into Formulas and Coupes, power accessories, etc.) A sunroof would not surprise me.
What is your VIN code? If it is close to the end of the run (26402) then it may have been one of these cars that got the freebies.

I will check my VIN when I get home. Also I did not buy the car as an investment (just love the look and ride) but I don't think I will be losing any $$$$$ if I ever decide to sell. The reason I started this thread is Ford messed up on my '03 Mach 1 (had regular GT seats and was missing the flat black body stripes) and I thought maybe the Fiero assemblers missed or added the sunroof or had some extra parts they wanted to get rid of.

The cars that came with the sunroof have the provisions so you can store it under the front hood. Does your have the pads that hold it and the wind deflector?

Welcome to the forum, by the way.
It's good that you are into the Fiero for the look and ride. Two areas that are still awesome after all these years. Resale value of the Fiero is not one of it's strong points.

If I remember correctly there are pads glued to the underside of the hood to hold the sunroof from bouncing when stored. Does that ring a bell (can't check my fiero right now).

Yes the car has the correct pads, etc. to hold the sunroof and the wind deflector. Had my appraiser look at the sunroof and he confirms it is factory. VIN # is 204942. Again thanks for all the replies.
