Sorry, but if it's leaking that badly, especially if the engine is off and the fuel pump is not running, it just about has to be physical damage to the tank. The tanks are steel.
If you replace the tank, be sure to get the right model year, since later models had a larger tank and they may not fit in the earlier models. I think 87 was the first year for the larger tank, but I'm not sure.

Do not drive it till repaired! (Mr. Obvious!) Jack the car up and check all the rubber fuel lines for deterioration. Did fuel continue to leak after fueling?

I haven't had time to check underneath yet but yes it did still leak when cornering, it also stinks of gas inside the car so much that it makes your eyes sting (worse with windows open). Only had the car 5 days and this was my first drive
Since it didn't happen unitl the tank was filled, it may be the "O" ring under the fuel pump cover on top of the tank. You're probably going to have to drop the tank to find the problem for sure.

Whoa....bad problem. These cars catch on fire. Just kidding, but with a gas leak you can perpetuate the myth. Fill it up and park it over some news paper. Look for the leakage area (wet paper). Jack up the driver's side and look again. The same thing with the passengers side. You do need to find that leak. For the gas fumes to get into the passenger compartment enough for eyes to water, that is a passenger compartment leak. It should not happen either. I am thinking gas filler inlet, to gas tank routing hose. The fuel filter is right behind the passenger's seat at the bottom of the enging bay, second suspect. Keep us posted !

And when you do, ................................I need back up. And when you do, the gas guage float which makes your gas guage read inncorrect, can be cleaned up to give you a more accurate gas guage. I am not sure.

if you chance driving tha car and have a near by oil change place or exhaust shop that has a under ground open bay they might let you pull in and have a look under your car to save jacking it up, and crawling under (just a thought)
there are 5 rubber lines in/on the tank
2 on the tank, and 3 on the fuel pump assembly all are just hose clamped on with hose clamps, its possible the hose clamps could have come loose and/or the 20 year old rubber has cracked
My guess- filler neck coupling hose or filler neck is leaking. DO NOT drive this Fiero until you find the gasoline leak. The hot CAT is not that far from the gasoline supply. A few drops on a hot CAT will ignite the gas and cause a fire. PLay it safe as you only have one life.
Dropped the fuel tank down and found .....hang on let me first explain something else.
My car doesn't have the original Fiero centre console and shift surround, it was replaced by previous owner with a black leather panel without ashtrays.
So, the tank is out and we discover that this previous owner has drilled right through the tunnel and into the tank to fix the console in place
I guess he's lucky he didn't blow himself up!

Brilliant.
But I've even seen and heard of professional installers doing the same thing, in various other vehicles. (Gas tanks. Heater cores. Automatic transmissions. )
Thanks guys, just need to sort a few more bits now....
Needs a new n/s steering rack gaiter Indicators have an earthing fault Fog light warning not working All brake callipers are seized and brakes not functioning, needs new pads all round Handbrake not working, needs new cables Fuel line resting on exhaust Oil pump gasket is leaking Trunk release switch requires replacing IAC faulty or possible EGR fault or induction leak
Still, it's only week # 3 of V6 ownership but I'll work through these and should have a nice car eventually
