NOS Gold Plated (metal) "FIERO" Front Fascia Emblem (rare?) Info Needed.
Hello all, Does anyone here have any info on the emblem I have in the url or photos seen below? I have never seen a gold plated, metal backed, gold inlayed NOS front bumper cover emblem before! This thing is heavy compared to the plastic usual emblems I have on hand.
This is an original NOS GM nos part (never installed) and it has be baffled because I can't find out anything about it so far!
I just talked with a gentleman from GM that was involved on some of the Fiero's pre-production stages, he said he has not ever seen a metal backed gold plated emblem make it into production (from 1984 thru 1987)
It has a metal backing unit that is gold plated (not the normal plastic backing unit) The color of the emblems Foil inlay of the Pegasus symbol is gold. The part number on the back does not come up in any Fiero parts books I have. DLA-14204
I was under the assumption that the only metal front bumper cover emblem that had a metal backing unit was with the enamel inlayed Indy Fiero front fascia emblem! This emblem has me at a loss right now. I would like to find out what application this gold plated metal backed nos front cover emblem was for before I send it off to ebay for sale. I have only seen a few gold colored plastic emblems that came on a few gold colored fieros in 1984.
If you have any info on application, or if this was a promotional type emblem, or maybe for a model that did not make it into production please let me know ASAP Please email fierodave@charter.net with any info you might have. Thank you Dave Andregg

I have the exact same emblem that I bought off ebay for about $10. It has the gold backing and even the same "14204" number. I bought it to replace my old 87SE's missing emblem, but the studs behind it were much bigger (like yours) than the 87SE's hole. I ended up selling the SE, and have the emblem on my table here as an ornament.
yep i think i had a couple 84's and they all had that emblem, mine were all tan interior too, wonder if that makes a difference, two black fiero's and one red one.
There was a METAL version and a PLASTIC version of this emblem...
The metal versions are rumored to be pure 24K gold and worth $500 in weight..... LOL, ok, just kidding on the pure gold thing... There is however metal and plastic of these.

I was thinking about that too... I know for certain that mine is metal (although the gold is only "skin deep") because I had to cut the locator pin off to fit it to my GT!

And this explains my confusion! "There was a METAL version and a PLASTIC version of this emblem..."
I must have only had the plastic ones until I found this lot of them on a pallet today lol For a second I thought i hit the jack pot, "The metal versions are rumored to be pure 24K gold and worth $500 in weight..."
If it was true, I would be about $30,000.00 to the good side on these emblems lol
Well, now I don't feel bad at all! I just received an email From Ed Parks (http://thefierofactory.com/) Mr. Parks stated he also had never seen or heard of a emblem like this before either. He also has a gold plated one with the metal backing unit, and thought it was an aftermarket item, or an item a customer may have made. He said, "I never would have thought it was an original GM part" FD

Tim hello, Noooooooooooo lol Loyde stated (as a joke) that they were worth $5oo.oo in gold weight, I then said i thought for a second i hit the jack pot because if they were worth $500.00 in gold weight I would have over $30,000.00 $ worth of gold weight then. sorry for the confusion. that would be a good payday lol What part number do you have on the box? The ones I have all came in one bulk pack bag from GM FD
THe early cars used metal plates (such as the 84). They later switched to plastic cause they were cheaper to produce and also, due to the urethane bumpers, if you hit something lightly, the bumper would flex but the emblem would bend. The bumper would bounce back to normal shape but you would have bent/ruined emblem. I know it doesn't justify switching, but these are rumors I heard about years ago.

That emblem is used on all 84's and 85's (except the 85 GT), and all 86 coupes (not including the SE or GT).
Nope, just '84 and '85 got the gold emblem. In '86 they went to the silver plastic one.
I've got a gold one on my '86 because it was available and the original was completely gone. Can't seem to find the plastic backing piece for the silver one anywhere...
I've never seen a plastic emblem backing before. I checked all the NOS emblems I have, all are metal, with a plastic insert.
Doug, way to funny, I had all plastic early emblems and you have all metal ones lol
I talked with another GM dude this afternoon that said he believed the original intention was to use this Gold Plated Metal Backed Emblem for the early model year Fiero, It seems the GM bean counters may have axed the Gold plated metal emblems in favor of a cheaper plastic emblem that was sourced out to a different vendor to save some money! Rumor is the switch to a cheaper plastic emblem may have saved GM $6.00 per car.
Don't sound like a lot of money, but with 213, 211 fieros's produced 1984 & 85 (less the GT's and the Indy) your looking at an estimated 185,000 units produced that may have used this style emblem. At $6.00 a unit, GM may have saved a million bucks + change.
No wonder these emblems were discontinued lol
