Okay after changing out fuses, light bulbs, etc. in the '88 Coupe, I discovered these 2 little lights under the ash trays in the console. I replaced them, but when/why do they come on? I closed the trays, opened them, but still nothing. What gives?

Same deal with the light in the cigarette lighter. What's it for? Heating unit?

(Yeah, it's always the little things that drive you buggy. LOL) As always, help is appreciated!

They come on when you turn your lights on. they are useless unless you smoke in your car in the dark.

They actually worked! lol Thanks for the tips, guys.

While I was replacing the others, I noticed that the light wasn't working in the gear shift (you know, where the P, R, N, D, etc. lights up), so I'm going to replace that one too.

I also found some spare fuses that are still good! Treasure hunt under way in the '88! lol

Revin, I found the lights for both at AutoZone. I already threw away the packaging, but I have to go back tomorrow for more "goodies" so I'll find the numbers and let you know. You can kind of make out the part number on the old bulb (if it's not too darkly burned out). I took the old ones with me and just eyeballed it. (Plus, they also had listings on the packages explaining what the bulbs are usually used for, so it made it easier to match.)
I'm still not sure about the Roundup. I want to go, but April 16th is kind of close and I'm not sure if I'll have the car ready in time. I may also have to travel on business around then--my schedule is still up in the air, so more than likely I won't know for sure until the last minute. Are you planning on going to Carlisle or the swap meet? Those are the next two trips that I'm targeting.

These ashtray lights, are they on all the years? I have an 84SE and I don't think I have them. I have the bulb in the console with the lighter, but it hasn't been hooked up since I re-did my console. I don't think my 84SE has the footwell bulbs either, unless they're burnt out

I found them on the auto bulb display at WalMart of all places...lol. Took one with me and just got some that looked the same and they worked. They came in 2-packs.

I found the ashtray lights to be useless. On the plus side they are direct replacements for the HVAC lights on the 4th gen firebird, That's where mine ended up.

Au contraire! Mine keep the console warm enough that sometimes I think I'm driving a front engine/rear wheel drive.

A list of all bulbs used in the Fiero can be found at this link: http://fierosails.com/PartsManual.html

Go to the "Bulbs/Lamps" heading in the left column and click on it. Bulb numbers and alternatives are listed.

Kingofkings- I don't think your 84 would have the underdash/floorboard lights from the factory. But.....check to see if you have the mounts one hole is beside the fuse box & the passenger side bracket is just above the kickplate. You can simply get sockets from an auto parts store or I'd suggest the salvage yard. Alot of GM cars have those lights & as far as I know the sockets are the same. I added them to my 85coupe & in my 86SE they're stock. makes a world of difference @ night.

Assuming the fuse and the bulbs are okay, remove the driver side ash tray and with your right index & middle finger probe inside the opening towards the gear shift and you should feel the wires and plug, with your light switch on wiggle the plug / wires and the light may come on. I had lights out on my gear shift selector light on my 87 Gt. this worked, you can remove the console to fix the problem correctly it may take an hour to do, it is probably a loose connection between the bulb socket & the wire.

What you need to repair is that foam around the shifter plate, THAT needs some help.

The shifter plate foam--actually the entire center console needs to be replaced. It's on the list, so believe me, as soon as I can, I'll be getting another one. LOL

Try repairing it. It's a whole lot cheaper then a new piece. Get some Gorilla Glue, craft sticks (tongue depressors) and small C clamps from Harbor Freight and you're good to go.

Worked great for me, and SO much cheaper than buying a new one, I even used those "tools"

Some 84s have them-some do not. We have 2 84 SEs and one has them-one delete. It's strange really. Jane's has pwr windows, auto trans, delay wipers, map pockets, but no footwell lighting package or front storage area light.
My few option 84 4 spd has no delay wipers-no pwr windows-no map pockets but has the footwell lights and front storge area light.. Go figure.
