I have located a bone stock 4 cylinder plain old '87 Fiero with 5900 (fifty nine hundred) miles. I can buy it for $5,000.00 and thought it would be a high gas mileage, pretty neat little car to zip around with. Drive it to 100,000 miles and still get a couple grand out of it (as long as it was decent at the end). Who knows, maybe they will catch on and become worth something. Pretty cheap miles in any case.
However I found several opinions on PY forum. I think most think it is a little pricey but can't fault the logic. One was very critical of the 4 cylinder motor. My question on this thread is what do you think it's worth? Does it have any unusual value as a car to put a higher HP motor in?. Does it make any sense to do this and what would be the best engine economically? Is the 4 cyl engine in the '87 Fiero any good? Was there more than one 4 cyl available in '87? If you had the opportunity to buy this car, would you?
Thanks

As far as I know, there was only 1 four cylinder available in the Fiero.
I happen to like my 4-cylinder '87. The gas mileage is great, and though most people think it's slow, it has enough power for me, and it's certianly faster than my Safari, or my old J2000. I'd say get it.

I guess if it has been stored properly, and you want a good commuter,go for it..Most of the fiero's mechanical parts are widely available. There was two 4 cyl models, coupe, and SE.Alltho I have never seen an 87SE,with a four cyl,but they are out there.

5900 miles for only $5,000.00? Go ahead and STEAL that. For that price that is exactly what your doing. Stick or auto? Stick will get you the best milage. Around 30 or even on the + side of that.

5 speed manual. No air. Not many options. I am inclined to pass. It would be interesting to see it go on Ebay I suppose.
I was looking at a Z-28 he had for sale and asked about the Fiero. He is advertising both seperately but I never saw the Fiero ad even though it was the same guy that has the Z-28. I wouldn't normally be looking for a Fiero but I saw it sitting next to the Camaro in the garage. Looks like he has been trying to sell it for a while. It's become clear to me that the Fiero's are not desirable as collecters (yet) especially this one.
I hate owning cars that go from purchase price to close to zero in the time you own it. The $$$ I was using for this purchase is supposed to be for a collecter car and this isn't it I geuss. Thanks for the help.
Without the exceedingly low mileage that is a $1000 car max... just know that going in. If it gets wrecked/stolen you'll be hard pressed to get even that out of an insurance company. A GT would be worth at least triple that.
I'm curious what sort of tracking and mileage everyone with 87 4 cylinder/5 speed manual coupes are getting. I've just gotten mine back on the road for the last month or so and am averaging around 26mpg (26.8 on first tank and 25.8 on second). I'm commuting about 20 miles each way a day and pull a pretty good grade hill on the way home for about 3-5 miles or so... thinking that along with some uh... spirited driving may be what has the mileage down that far. It's disappointing since my 86 New Yorker gets better than that with a turbo 2.2/automatic and the New Yorker is a way faster car.

I have an 87 4cyl 5spd coupe and average at least 30mpg, most of the time it's 31-33 mpg. I commute about 60 miles a day, 30 there and 30 back. I don't drive it like a baby either. It has 79,000 miles on it now, put 6000 miles on it since I bought it about 4-5 months ago. It's funny that someone said one with 5900 miles is only worth $1000! I was offered just about $2500 for this car not too long ago and I turned it down.
5-6000 miles is nothing of importance. A car ages even when parked. It likely needs significant work.
There is no way I'd pay 5 grand for any fiero that hasn't had major work done to it. None of the stock configurations are worth that no matter how clean they are.
brake parts will go bad just from sitting. brake fluid doesn't stop degrading just because a car is parked. old fluid will result in dead parts in the system. Rust will make it so you at least have to turn the rotors. odds are they have to be replaced. Coolant actually separates from the water when left standing. Don't be surprised if the water pump or some other part dies in short order even if you flush the system before driving. The stagnant coolant has already done its damage.
