GM is putting the Ecotec in a lot of cars. There is one or two guys here on the Fiero Forum attempting to put it in their Fieros. Will be nice when they get done. I was thinking the they were put in Cavilers in 2001.

Yeah im seeking another fiero for another project and would love to take on something.... That's going to be a extra pain in the butt to accomplish

I was at micheals junkyard and seen one of these on the engine stand..... They had a number of them, But would not tell me what year cars they came out of, All I have to say is this is one neat looking little engine, And unlike any engine in design that I have seen.

prices brandnew are really not that expensive.

ive raced a 5 speed 2004 sunfire, with my fiero, and, well, i was sadly unimpressed with the pickup the engine provided. think of it as a domestic honda engine, but, somehow, slower. but, hey, maybe the other guy diddnt know how to drive..

What a great little motor. I like the ecotec. They first offered them in Cavaliers and Sunfires starting in 2002, but it was an option, the old non-ohc 2.2 4 cyl was standard. The engine also came out in 2002 on the Saturn Vue (first year for the Vue was 2002 model year). They were standard equipment in Grand Am's starting with '02 MY.

I'm thinking the guy in the Sunfire didn't know what they were doing or you have a fast Fiero. The ecotec in a J-body goes pretty good with the 5-speed. I've driven Honda Civics and I feel a J-body with an ecotec will out sprint a Honda.

the ecotec was first released in the saturn L series in 2000, not in 2002 with the vue.

I like the ecotec and the direction it is going in. Right now it is still behind Honda (yes I know that in 02 was the first year a Caviler could bear a Civic but that is here in America) Still GM needs to work with it more. I mean ya it's cool it has a supercharger available but compared to stock JDM Honda engines the ecotec is still behind. Heck just a stock B18
C (R) has HP: 210hp@8000 Torque: 134 lb-ft@7500. Granted the torque is lacking but could you imagine if GM had an engine like that with a supercharger for low end torque!? That would be one fast ride. With the Civic SIR coming out, the Scion TC supercharged (for only 20,000.00) and the SRT4 out I see that all this competition will be a good thing for the ecotec. I'm hoping this is the next "muscle car" type age where companies compete to make the cheapest and fastest cars and we the consumers are the winners. GM right now is doing one thing very right. Both the ecotec and its supercharged version is for sale as a crate engine! Here is a link to if any of you guys wants to check it out. http://www.gmpartsdepot.com/store/category.aspx?SID=2&Category_ID=67&

Aw man I can't wait till this is available..... A very nice platform to start on...My concern is, it seems it peeks at 205hp at 5600rpm what makes me believe it runs out of breath after 5600rpm.... The price of this is not soo bad either for a brandnew crate engine.... But I hope this has aftermarket to it to make those numbers below more desirable.... Im going to do more homework on this engine but after seeing a version of one of these up close..... Made me drool.

This is a supercharged 4 cylinder Crate Engine (RPO LSJ) with the following features:
• DOHC with Sequential Fuel Injection supercharged fuel system
• Bore 86.00 mm and Stroke 86.00 mm with 9.5:1 compression ratio
• 205 Horsepower @ 5600 RPM and 200 lb-ft @ 4000 RPM torque
• This engine powers the Saturn ION Redline
• These production trim engines include:
exhaust manifold, intake manifold, injectors, fuel rails, balancer, water pump and flywheel.

Pulley, belt, p/s pump, a/c pump, starter, alternator, engine cover, not included with this engine. This engine is for Manual transmission (MU3) applications ONLY

As someone who drives the Supercharged Ecotec... let me tell you my experience.

First from the reports I read, the 205 is WAY underrated, and that when Car and Driver tested it, it was 197 AT THE WHEELS!

As far as it running out of breath at 5600... From what I've read they bleed off the pressure around there, so you make the 12 pounds before 5600 and then they keep it going at 12.

I haven't ever hit the rev limiter despite driving it hard and racing it... Some say it would benefit by a 500RPM higher redline, I really don't know that much to be able to tell you.

But the 2003 Mustang GT owner who was making fun of me for my "little" car sure seemed impressed when he learned what ION taillights look like.

That being said... I think the Ion Redline weighs around 3700 lbs... so I'm sure it would rule in a Fiero.

And also, GM has the 2.0L Ecotec turbocharged and installed in Saabs. I've driven one of those too, and when the turbo hits, your arse really feels it.

yah, i test drove that redline, and i must say, i was impressed. to the point that i wish i could afford one. its much more civil under 3k rpms than my quad is, and it pulls like a mofo, even from down low. would be kickin to have in a fiero.

funny thing, the guy at the saturn dealership had a fiero with a 350 and a ferrari body kit. was there with my gf looking at the ions, only saturn i payed attention to was the redline. it was saturday, and he didnt have time to humor me with a test drive that day, but said that i should come back during the week, wed go for a spin. so i did, and we did. love that motor man. the only problem i had, was traction. it was a wet day outside.

at the local j-yard, theyve got a little supercharged acura 4 banger sittin on display for sale, everytime i see it, my wheels start turning.... lol

Whoa pHoOl, did you say 3700 lbs!? The curb weight is Curb Weight 2933 lbs. But for a review on both the Ion and Cobalt check these car and driver reviews. Lets hope the compact wars have begun. (Cobalt SS, Ion Red line, Civic SIR, Scion TC supercharged, Doge SRT-4) all for around 20,000.00

Ion http://www.caranddriver.com/article.asp?section_id=16&article_id=8537

Cobalt http://www.caranddriver.com/article.asp?section_id=19&article_id=9020

ya I just checked the weight online. On Autotrader they list it as 2933 and car and driver says 2984. I'm guessing maybe GM is putting extra weight on the sticker and lowering the HP on the sticker. (just think what the SRT-4 did to lower insurance) Trust me this is a major reason why F body sales fell like a brick. Sure you could buy one new back in the day for around 20,000 but then hardly anyone could afford the crazy insurance rate with it. I think that is why we will see GM saying on the sticker that the HP is lower then what it really is.
