Like the topic says, I am trying to come up with a good color scheme for my sbc swap and I was looking to paint the engine bay a color other than black I did some searching and couldn't find any pictures of painted engine bays and thought mabey others would be interested in this as well. Also if I was to go this route how should it be done to look good for a long time, EX: clean bay, then primer, then paint, then clear? Alright guys, show me what ya got...... Thanks in advance and there may be a few pluses in it for ya

I agree that I will probably want to kill myself the third or fourth time I have to clean it, but I guess im trying to convince myself it's a labor of love . I just finished the painting the block/heads a dark, rich, anodized red (almost maroonish), and as of now have chrome valve covers and oil pan but that can be changed. I guess I will give it a shot painting it white, cuz it's easy enough to paint it black if it doesn't turn out good. I will let you know how it turns out, but until then any pictures for reference would still be much appreciated.... --Nathan--

FieroMaster: That looks better than excellent. If you don't mind my asking, how did you prep the engine bay before painting? That will probably be how I end up painting it if the white doesn't work out. Thanks for posting--Nathan

Well, I spent a good ammount of time with some degreaser (simple green I think) and some water. Then I washed everything down with dish soap and water. Did a little sanding with some 400 grit sand paper. I rinced everything down good again and let it dry, then sprayed the paint. I got the paint from AutoZone. It's the Duplicolor paint, I think it was called textured deep grey metalic or something of that sort. It looks awesome and turned out gerat. I normally suck at painting, but this paint went on soo easy it was scary!
Oh yeah, I forgot. I made sure everything was pulled out of the engine bay and stuff I didnt want painted was masked off really well.

Here are some pictures of my painted engine bay, the guy I brought the car from spent a lot of prep time on it, and after 4+ years it still looks good, although it is not a daily driver and here it is after assembly

Now this is the kind of stuff I was hoping for. You all get +'s for your help and I commend your excellent work. Also do you think primer would be a waste of time, or could I possibly use primer instead of sanding? --Nathan--

Something I've thought about using is that tri color splatter paint that GM used to use for trunks in the 60's. It makes imperfections/bolts/layers of metal etc just completely disappear into a smooth looking area. The real stuff is tough as nails also and touchup just means spraying more on since it automatically 'blends'. Used to use it on truck beds before Rhino Lining etc came out. It would make dents and scrapes just visually disappear. Might lighten up the engine bay without being too distracting... or might look like crap :-)
Hope this adds another idea.

Funny you should mention that because thats what the guy at Pep Boys reccommended to me. He said he was using it on the engine bay in his blazer and it looked pretty good. I may have to give it a try as I am worried that the white will fade and end up looking like a vanilla milkshake, kind of a creme color, disgusting. I think I will have spent about $100 on paint when this is all said and done Kinda ironic since this is supposed to be a budget swap. Ahh well... --Nathan--
Not that I know much about it, but couldn't you just degrease it then use Duplicolor engine paint? Seems to me that since it shouldn't get alot of stuff whacking into it a good paint with no primer should work... This was going to be my plan anyway, for when I got to that point, is that completely wrong? Asked by the girl who has done much painting on various parts of her car with Rustoleum...

If you want a really top notch look I would stay away from the spray paint for a color. It looks good with black but everyone I've seen with colored spray paint - well it looked like crap when it started chipping.
I primered mine then shot it with enamel with hardner.
Not the best pic but you get the idea...
