The 3.4 DTC is the motor of choice for the Fiero that I will soon buy. So how much does it cost to put a 3.4DTC in a 5spd FieroGT.(not including the price of the car or the engine)? I was going to go with a SBC but decided to go with the 3.4 because i read the reviews on the 3.4 and I also had one in a Lumina Z34 and a Cutlas Supreme. I guess the best one is a 94 and older right? Thanks in advance guys.

Not much.
You get the engine 91-97, you get a 93 computer, you read on the internet how to do your wiring harness, if you screw it up, or don't want to attempt it I've heard some people will do it for 250, send a chip to Darth or someone else for the ECM to be tricked into thinking its a stick and getting it to work with the fiero electronics, 50$ I assume.
So 300$ US after you have a car, an engine, and 93 ecm.
If you have an 88 fiero v6 you take your engine out, put in the TDC DOHC, if its 85-87 v6, it also bolts up but I think you have to shave one of the mounts, and redrill a bolt hole. You put it in, grind the passenger hood hindge area, reroute your coolant lines etc. Fab a dog bone, (read on this)
ITS CHEAP IF YOU DO IT YOURSELF.
It's more complicated then this obviously, but this is the jist of it from what I've read.
rate me if you found me helpful or not.
thanks.

Well mine cost me about $3k, did it myself. I'd do an install for about $3k plus engine/computer.

now did all that money go into the engine bay? or did you also upgrade the brakes ans suspension at the same time, most people pricing out what a swap cost them tend to include all this - which is nice to have upgraded and will improve the overall finish of the swap but isn't essential..

i've been gathering all the parts for mine and should have everything i need for my turbo 3.4tdc for about 1300$ the rest is labor

It should cost little more than the engine. The wiring is very easy, I can provide instructions for that, the ECM can be done by darth for little money, the tranny bolts right up, the mounts need only minor trims on the front engine mount. The exast is the only tricky part, but I got my muffler for $80 and got it put on for $100. If I didnt get drawn into a major project with mine, it would have cost less than $750.
But Instead of just putting the engine in my 86GT, I somehow managed to fall into doing a manual swap on an 88 coupe, puting the engine in there, taking the whole body and interior off of it, getting the frame rustproofed, body repainted, remote starter installed, sidescoops, new tires, then changing the 88coupe to a GT, oh yea, and a full poly bushing kit. Ive been busy Theres more Ive forgotten im sure

I was following your upgraes on your car 3.4. How much can a lower mile OBD1 3.4 DOHC eingine cost? What times can I expect to get out of a 3.4 5spd. (1/4 Mi.)? Are there any performance mods for these engines? How about porting/polishing heads and intake, how much will that help? Turbo cost? Sorry for the questions. This is one of the most informative forums and definately all of you guys are very nice. Thanks

I am just about to start this project and the biggest expense I see next to the Engine will be exhaust.I bought a 730 ECU for Darth to reprogramI bought the 95 3.4tdc for 200 it had 56,000k on it.It cost about 100 for the belts and pulleys for the maint on the motor.I got a v6 harness for pocket change.(I actually have 2). I just have to get a 3.4 harness and motor mounts and I'm ready to start.Like I said the exhaust is the undetermined cost in my soon to be 88 coupe 3.4TDC.

i just picked up my complete engine setup from a 95 with 62,000 miles for 1000$ tested and running.. you may find cheaper
the 3.4 manuals are getting high 13's low 14's
performance mods mainly are cam timing and nitrous/boost
cam timing is said to give 35 hp
boost cost and results will vary - the more $ the more hp

I thought these swaps were much more expensive, even for the DIY-er. Has anyone used the 3.65 4 spd with these swaps? That's the tranny I have right now. I would like to swap to the getrag, but it will add a lot more cost to the swap. Did all the cars that these engines came with have auto trannies? If not, would the swap be easier with an engine from a manual trans car?

Excluding the motor:

$50 Darth's reprogrammed prom shipped
$250 Erik's modified wiring harness shipped
$60 neutrally balanced flywheel and machined
$75 Misc hoses for brake booster, coolant, heater hoses and in line rad filler.
$500 2.5" mandrel bent exhaust with magnaflow muffler
$140 second front exhaust manifold.. ouch!
$160 new cavalier z24 clutch
$50 5/16 and 3/8s brake line for fuel lines with compression fittings

Optional
$25 3" outlet free flow air filter
$0 13* cam retard for an additional 30hp
$100 new timing belt and tensioners
$50 iridium sparkplugs
$60 battery relocation

There is probibly more small stuff, definilty less than $100 worth. I would say this swap is easier and cheaper than a 4.9.

Ouch is right. Why so much? Is that new price from GM? I could get one here in local junkyard for about 20.00

ive got a parts 3.4L DOHC motor with the manifold on it, im going to attempt this swap later on also, just finding a good motor has been a chore..... i found a 91 cutlass with 284 5 speed for $400 with 188k miles looks well maintained, but the owner let it set for 2 years (was well maintained when his father owned it) after his father passed away he refused to drive it... so its sat for a long time. i tried to get it to start, but it would only crank, i think fuel pump went out.

so erik does the wiring for $250 huh, looks like this swap could happen sooner than i thought.
