Why would you drop the rear of the cradle to replace the muffler? Just unhook the rear emergency brake cables, unbolt the headpipe, remove the springs and tail pipe hangers and work the exhaust system down out of the car.

Maybe unbolting the headpipe is as hard for him as for me... I'm not sure there's steel there, just rust I think dropping the cradle would be easier than dealing with that.

I don't know if I recommend it, or am 100% positive I saw it, but I believe I noticed at a Pontiac Dealership, a Fiero with the cradle swung down at 90 degrees with the engine in place. I assume they drained the oil. This was many years ago, and I only caught a glimpse of it as I was driving by the garage bay.

What kind of engine do you have?

Not sure about the 4's, but the V6's can swing down far enough to pull the transmission out the side.

Just disconnect things that go from the engine to the firewall... fuel lines, feed the wiring harness through the bulkhead passthrough, dogbone, possibly remove the alternator and coil cooling ducts.

Then just lower away. Watch carefully to stretching things, catching on things, or crushing things. The brake line on the trunk wall is a likely victim... Ask me how I know...
