I did not go to the Dream Cruise, but my friend sent me these pics and said that this 88 GT Northstar 5-speed was in GM's area and was built by GM. Did anyone see this car or does anyone know anything about it? Is he mistaken, or is it really a GM car?
Anyway, that car originally got the L44 option (2.8 engine), as listed on the left of the sticker. That engine in the pics is a swap, and the "L37 option" piece of paper was added for a touch of humor. GM did not even offer the Northstar until 1993.

'88 4-cyl. coupes started at $8999, '88 Formulas were merely a $2000 option on the base coupe, so they started at $10,999, '88 GTs had a base price of $13,999. GT's typically came with a lot of options, which is why the actual purchase prices were in the $16-$17K range (although some loaded Formulas were more expensive than some stripped GT's!).
BTW.....to put these prices into perspective, $13,999 in 1988 dollars is equivalent to $21,620.85 in 2003 dollars when inflation is factored in.

GM would NEVER put hose clamps like that on the Fuel lines of a show car or daily driver. The Fuel pressure could blow them off over time. They have two clamps on each line but they are not even the Fuel Injection style clamps. And the quick disconects are plastic, they should be matal. The plastic fittings are for the gas tank and other places were it dose not get that hot. Gm would not use the drier hose on the intake eather. That stuff could deform or colaps under high vacuume. That looks like a DS1 kit to me but it is a good looking job any ways.

Yes, that's Ken Shadlak's car. Not GM built. And it's an auto not a manual.
What he said. It may have been in GM's area because Ken works for GM, or it could just be because he wanted to keep it with some other GM products, or it could just be where he randomly decided to park it.
Nice find at the cruise! Ken's car is beautiful! Maybe he has it in with the rest of the GM display in an attempt to give some of the other GM people a hint!

Just to clarify, I knew this was not a factory car, and I saw that it came with a 2.8l. My friend told me that this car was build by GM's new performance engineering department, as some kind of experiment...I guess he inferred it since it was in the GM area. I had a feeling that people would recognize it as a some private owner's car, which is why I wosted the pics. Either way, nice car.

If your asking if this is how it came from the factory, uuummm no!
Although you are correct that it didn't come from the factory like this, read the window sticker again, Bobby...the 2.8 is listed in the standard equipment list. Just about any window sticker for any car will have the standard engine listed here. If it has a larger, optional engine, it will be listed in the optional equipment listing...just where this gentleman put the "Northstar option". The window sticker for my Ford pickup shows the 4.6 liter V8 as standard...it's listed just like the 2.8 is above. But the 5.4 V8 that it came with is listed down below in the optional equipment list. You ARE right...the 2.8 WAS what came in this car, and it's obvious it was altered. But the "Northstar option" WAS listed in the correct area where an optional engine...if it was available for this car...would be listed.
