In my recent quest for "more power" I have come up against a wall regarding DIS and boost.

To be totally candid I havent convinced myself of what im doing but it looks like it going to lose the 3.4 and goto the 3400 motor with some "donkification"

My recent issues with DIS has prompted me to consider a PCM/ECM "swap". I picked up 2 7730 PCMs with the harnesses that I plan to build a "adaptor pigtail" so in essence it will be unplug fiero ECM, plug in adaptor, plug in PCM and your good to go. Now the wiring diagrams are all over the internet and the Admin of GMPCM "MICK" did this swap and he provided me with the wiring diagram.

It would be easy enough to cut the fiero plug ins out and wire it directly to the newer style plugs for the updated computer but I wanted this to be "plug n' play"

Now with this swap you saying what the hell would i go through all that work for?

Well this PCM will run DIS and a Turbo flawlessly with one wire added for the turbo <i am not 100% sure of the name of the wire yet as im not a booster> and ofcourse a knock sensor.

So what I am planning on making for sale is an "adaptor harness" for the fiero harness to the newer PCM and then an "adaptor harness" for the fiero engine harness to a coil pack.

So instead of running a "bandaid fix" like a 85 fiero ecm with a knock sensor capability and then maybe a MSD BTM or whatever you can just swap your computer and go from there.

Now I know alot of folks here like the idea of " 2 bolts and 30hp later" but this isnt it. I am making one for myself now and if anyone is interested let me know. If I get like 100 people <as if> wanting the adaptors and/ or PCMS i need to start evaluating my position.

Ofcourse you will need a modified code TGP chip which im sure Darth Fiero can burn for you. Hell I can modify the BIN and everything but I dont have burning capabilty

Im not being a dick when I say this might be beyond most folks but if your interested let me know.

Oh and this can run 4,6 and 8 cylinders with this PCM

From what I recall the 7730 isn't capable of monitoring boost (1 Bar Map Sensor) so I am interested in this wire you are mentioning. Let us know what comes of that.

Well nothing a 2bar map wont fix and some modified code. Hell you can do that with a 6869 ECM.

AUAF $8F code is boost compatible (from a 90-91 Grand PRIX turbo) It is from the 1227727 computer witch is IDENTICLE to the 1227730 computer, but is weatherproofed for underhood use. All you do is use the 1227730, and pop in the calpack/prom from the 90-91 Grand prix. I have the pin cross refrence from the 1227730/727's and you just use the wastegate pin to controll a solenoid for the wastegate, then you change the map for a 2 bar. DONE!

The only thing is that DIS requires a couple more wires to be added to the harness as well as a knock sensor. Iv'e been working on this Idea for a while too The best part is that the AUAF $8F code has been dissassembled, and is available for tuning programs. and perhaps even better, is that its for a 3.1 witch is half way between a 2.8 and a 3.4. So it will probably work ok with either of those engines too.
Pin cross reference!

good readings here too. This will help with the wiring, Keep in mind this is on the 7727, and will have to be cross referenced to the 7730 using the link I provided before.

https://www.fiero.nl/forum/Archives/Archive-000001/HTML/20040710-2-048257.html
and in this file is the Pinout as it is used in the Grand Prix's
ftp://ftp.diy-efi.org/uploads/GPTGIF.zip

I almost forgot that those computers, being that they are P4 type ECM's also control the fan, and need a different VSS pulse rate to work properly, those problems will need to be addressed not to mension the fact that Cast Iron 2.8's do NOT have a crank sensor witch is needed to work the DIS unit. Perhaps an external Crank trigger is needed. This conversion is much more suited to those like myself that have a 3.4 conversion, or a 3.1 from a Silihouette, lumina or transport (minivan's) But it would be really easy once the ECM is converted, to just put in the turbo (supercharger?) and go! Oh, and you can finally get rid of the distributor and run that 3.4 Camaro intake you know you want!

Thanks for all that info that helps me alot.

I was thinking that today that this really doesnt apply to the 2.8 crowd. more for the V6 swappers or hybrids.

Might just be easier to swap in a woked over gen3 motor and build a harness with the fiero wiring and 7730 in the stock location with the TGP code.

I must be a glutton for punishment.

Its a shame it can't just be a plug and play. But there is a possibility of it being just shy of that. I believe (not proven fact) that the TGP code CAN be modified to accept the 2K PPM that the Fiero VSS delivers. The fan DOES NOT need to be hooked up to the computer (but I much perfer that they are) and the extra couple of wires can be on a small second harness, just to feed the DIS pack and the knock sensor.

This is how the ECM looks at the VSS:
It first takes the pulses and converts it into MPH (literally!)
00 being 0 MPH all the way to FF, being 255 MPH. (this is in hexidecimal)
Then the computer uses this 00-FF to control everything else that needs speed to determine operation. All you would have to do I think is tweak the input pulse conversion to something much lower, and maybe the computer will understand it. This is actually how the ECM understands everything it inputs and outputs. It converts it into 00-FF and then treats it like raw data for a program to interperate. Most of the ECM's board is dedicated to converting raw inputs into raw data, then converting the computed data into useful outputs. but enough of ECM 101.

I forgot another difference, the 1227727/7730 use a different type of EGR. But the good news is that the AUAF $8F does NOT have an EGR! you know what that means? A few spare wires!! Those will come in handy when hooking up the DIS/Knock sensor.

Actually I think Mick did use the EGR wires for his PCM controlled turbo.

I this can be done cause there is a 88 Formula with a turbo 3100 with this setup.

I just bought a 7730 computer today. I was chuckling alittle when I noticed that the two black plugs are identicle to the two black plugs already on the Fiero. So All I would have to do is move the wires around and add the yellow connector to the group and move some of the pins over to it. What a joke. Thats almost too easy. I don't think a From-To is even necessary. Its now just a paperclip the wiring diagrams and some patience. Who'da thunk it?

Ah, Dude, that's not a 7730 ECM.

The 7730 looks like this.

This is mine in my Fiero, it's running my turbo 3100.
It has four plugs, which are color coded white, blue, green, and orange.

Sorry, I just thought you should know before you got too far into it......

hmmmm....
looky all this stuff.
I've got a '94 Lumina 3.1 block, has the crank position sensor, cam postion sensor & the knock sensor all still on the block, just not hooked to anything. would be nice to hook these up, and go DIS & SFI with a proper ECM. never put much tought to it, since it works as is, but DIS & SFI would make it much more efficient. would also need to run new injector lines for the SFI, since with the MPFI, they are wired in a pair of 3 injectors. Bah...never mind...wouldn't be able to use the MSD box with DIS either....to much work for immeasuarble gain. If I were to do it again, yes, I'd do it with DIS & SFI, but when I did it, I didnt know any better....

I just finished installing my 1227730. Its definatly NOT the black box 1227727 like the one in the pic above, but functionally Identicle.
The swap wasn't too hard. But I am having alot of problems. It ALWAYS runs a code 54. NO matter what I try. Even tried connecting "E1" strait to 12V. Nothing seems to get rid of it. Its supposed to be tapped into the ALDL wire, I think "G" The tan/white one. The other problem I am having is the VSS not giving out enough PPM, witch I had a feeling it would become a problem. Kinda makes me wish I had the 125C automatic, at least that could be converted to the proper Vss. Oh well...
Other then that, It doesn't like to run right. I need to get my hands on a scantool ASAP. I tried running the AUAF $8F code and it has terrible throttle responce (yes, I do have the 2 bar map in with that chip) I disabled the code 54 on that program and it didn't make any difference, other then the check engine light staying off for a change. It Idles around 600 (lopey Idle). I had tried the ARZW $6D code, It's at least driveable with that code. Does anyone know what code was used on a 89-90 beretta with a 3.1 and a 5 speed? I need this car to be driveable, while I play with the AUAF code. This is kinda fun to mess with though. I have to come up with a VSS or get the "VSS interpereter" somehow, Perhaps the code can be modified to use a lesser pulse rate.

Hey, for real?? I guess there is more than weatherproofing that makes them different then, LOL

Mine came from a 92 Cutless Supreme, and everything works perfectly now. The only codes that set were from sensors that I hadn't hooked up, and they went out when I connected them.

I recommend getting it to run right in NA mode before adding in the turbo. Unless you need the practice swapping pistons.
