First off is that T for turbo? second While I was out in the Formula today I ran into a punk with his girlfreind, and they were driving a Jetta 1.8T. And he starts hammering on the car. So I decide to humor him. we were on the high way. I was in front of him. As we are going, I shift into 4th and he is starting to pull on me. He was not pulling fast but was starting to pass me. Keep in mind I do have a 2.8 with some mods doe to it. So If it is a turbo then I dont think I did too bad. Oh and when i was getting off the high way he gave me a thumbs down like Ill never hang with him. I think with a couple more upgrades to this engine I could beat him.
Out of Curiousity what do those run in the 1/4?
Oh I dont support street racing. I was just out having fun on a nice day.

On the 1.8T the T stands for turbo, the newest ones have 180hp, which might not seam like much but they are very easy to modify and get really good power out of them. They have a huge aftermarket support. They can be made to be very fast. I have a friend w/ a Buick T-Type ( a white Grand National ) that has a lot of modifications, he bump into one of those 1.8T that have been moded and he told me he was very surprised how fast the car was.
I personally would not run with a modified 1.8T unless I had a swap, was runing a turbo or had NOS. just my .02 cents.

The next time you see the Jetta, make sure you fly them the middle finger for me? Then just drive away knowing you have the better car. I took a Jetta all the way, into 4th and them some 2.8 '86. Started to pull from me a little in 3rd, but I just took it to the orange line, put it in forth. I think they were surprised to see a 20 year old car hang with them.
Hey pontiac boi , I thought all GTI's were v6's? The 1.8t is a four banger . Something doesn't add up. But then again its an import so I'm not to knowledgable in there options and such (like i even care).Anyway you beet him so thats cool.

The GTI is a car model, like the Jetta and Golf. 1.8T and VR6 are an option package like our SE and GT. VR6 is the V6(2.8L IIRC) and 1.8T is the 1.8 Turbo.
All three car models have the 1.8T and VR6 option.

I, well the wife actually, have a 2oo3 Turbo Jetta, and I can say that I, & a few others as well, are pleasantly surprised w/ the performance w/ the car. I actually prefer to drive the 1.8T around town vs. my 2ooo Trans Am. The handling is far superior, and a lot nimbler than the TA as well.
The turbos are very quiet from the factory. You can hear 'em spool up, but you need to have the stereo off, & the windows down. You can definitely feel when it kicks in though. Spool starts at about 18oo RPM, and really pulls hard when you get to about 4ooo.
Great little cars, and yes, the aftermarket for them is just insane, as well as the warranty. 4yr/5ok mileage.
I remeber i was in a stop light, and there was this dude with a VW Golf(looked like a 98-99 maybe), and i was looking at his ride because he had some pretty sweet rims, anyways he gave me a hard look and i just looked away. When the light turned green i knew he was gonna hammer it, so i didnt just to piss him off. After hearing his stock little engine purr, i gunned it and shifted to 1st, just to show him that i at least have some decent exhaust (factory ) and i caught up to him while we are both rapidly accelerating, but i was in front of him by a hair and when i looked down at my RPM's, they were roughly at about 5000 (my car sounds good at high rpm) and he finally let off (i thought he was going to slaughter me) but at the next light he never pulled up next to me, he had about a car lenght of space in front of him and kept behind me ..............i felt pretty good afterwards
------------------ I own an original yellow 1988 pontiac fiero GT, (wingless, currently purple) very proud also....Truly is...Driving Excitement! Matching numbers GT #17889 of 26,402 made in 1988

Yeah I dont think the guy like the fact that a 15/16 year old Fiero Formula gave him a good run on the highway. I think thats why he gave me the thumbs down.

A friend of mine had a New Beetle Turbo (150hp, 5-speed) and I raced him in my bone stock '99 Grand Am SE (3400 V6). We ran almost dead even. As a comparison, I raced LZeitgeist's stock 88 Formula 5-speed in my Grand Am and again, we ran almost dead even. So a stock Formula should be close to the New Beetle Turbo. Now, the Turbo S is 180HP and has a 6-speed. I don't know the weight differences between the New Beetle and Jetta, but the Bug should be a bit faster than a stock Formula.
Watch out for the VR6, though. It's about 220HP. Nice little engine. I wouldn't mind a Jetta VR6 as a daily driver. (The New Beetle is comfy and all, but the styling just isn't my taste)
