Do you mean "Autobahn" as in German motorways? I've heard a few times from Americans that there's the misconception that the Autobahn is a special high-speed stretch of highway somewhere in Germany. Correction: "Autobahn" means "Highway" and we have over 7.000 miles of it in a country a little over half the size of Texas. And there's no general speed limit...

Yellowstone. I'm curious. I never drove the autobahn when I was in Europe. Even though there is no speed limit, do people drive at any particular average speed or is it just a free-for-all Grand Prix race?

There are suggested speed limits and it is illegal to flip someone off on the Autobahn... or gesture in ANY unfriendly way. It is illegal to tailgate as well. Heh... I like those rules.

Autobahn is just in Germany, not generally in Europe. In France their're called "Autoroute", in Spain "Autovias". Germany is the only country without a general speed limit on highways. There are many stretches with speed limits though (usually 80, 100 or 120 km/h) when there are repairs, curves, poor visibiliy etc. Then there's a lot of traffic so that usually slows you down, especially the trucks that tend to block the right lanes. But if there's no local speed limit and no traffic (countryside at 4am) it's as fast as your car will go. And, trust me, at 130 mph in the Fiero there's always a Porsche, an Audi S6, a BMW M3, a Mercedes SL or something like that that will come of behind you going MUCH FASTER than you... and so you are on the slow lane again... :-)

It was cheap, actually, since I "bought" it while living in Colombia. But generally in Germany driving licenses are at least 1500 Euro or about 1300 Dollars.

I spent some time in Germany as a foreign exchange student after high school. Didn't get to drive, but I loved it there. My host sister just got her license, cost her over 3000 DM between classes and the license. The autobahn was great, I didn't have any high speed rides, but the whole system was so smooth. No cutting people off, no passing on the right, no slow poking in the fast lane, no trucks in the left lanes, no tailgaiting, and if you came up behind someone, they would get out of your way, no flashing the brights, or riding the left side to shine their mirrors. And the road itself was pristine. Not a single pot hole or crack, the rain water rolled right off, and they have cool seperator polls that make it so that a driver can't see much other then the road, but the passangers can look out at the scenery.

I tell ya, if Bush gets re-elected, I might have to head back

If you don't like George Bush, what kind of an American are you? JK. Seriously though, I wish we here in the states had something like that SOMEWHERE.

Umm... what? Montana got rid of the "reasonable and prudent" law, and traded it for 75mph limits a few years back... As far as I knew, that was the only state that had no speed limit. Well... I mean besides the backroads of nowhereville, NV I suppose

I have been on the Autobahn several times. Fun. But when there's an 50mph speed limit they mean it! Some of my buddies found out (twice!) during our winterholiday trip.

*why is that black BMW sitting aside the road?*

car2
*why is that black BMW blinking those lights in my mirror?*

You don't wanna be speeding on the highway here if your close to my town. We have a ton of cops around here, 30-40 miles out from town and you can basicly go however fast you want, may want to carry a radar detector though for the occasional highway patrol.
