Well I've been workin on my new sail panels lately. I got the spares from Markjpana (Thanks again!!!). The sail panel inserts came from www.fierosails.com (Paul McKibben) and they look great!! I couldn't get a good enough picture of them in my room, but heres the first one. Pictures don't do justice, can't wait to finish painting the other and install these puppies!

My carpet is actully a bright blue, and the panels are glossy black. The letters are a shiny metallic silver.

How difficult is it to take off the old ones and put the news ones on? I have a good set of sail panels waiting to go on, but I'm a bit unsure of how to do it.

I'm not sure if the panels I got were just weak, or what, but I found it fairly simple to remove the old ones. I started by working my fingers under the front edgeand pulling up. The 2stick tape peeled cleanly off of the plastic stock panel. I worked my way around pulling up forcefully on the edge. The plastic panel bends quite a bit as you work around the edge. I was then left with the stock panel and all the tape. I used a razor blade to scrape off what I could then had to remove the residue. I tried goo gone, and no luck. I ended up using a 3M stripper stuff. Still wasn't perfect, but darn close. I sanded the panels, painted them, wetsanded, then painted again. I glued the crest in, and then put the panel on.

Here are the 2 old panels. On the right, u can see how the backside was perfectly clean. I started stripping the other panel, but u can see how the tape was perfectly intact still. The other 2 sides have been razored, but not yet cleaned.

I've done two cars with sail panels from Paul, and just ordered a third set yesterday for an 85SE I just bought last week. On the first car I did, I pulled off the frames, but the second car I left them on. this next one, and most likely any others I do in the future, will be done on the car. Those plastic clips are NLA and even if you manage to get the old ones off without breaking them they go back in quite loose. I did find some clips at the auto parts store that worked fairly well, but I still haven't seen what I would call a good replacement. It really isn't that big of a deal to just replace the panels with the frames still on the car anyway.
BTW: be sure to check your new panels for fit in the frame before you pull the tape backing off. both my sets needed just a very slight sanding of the top edge to let them set down compleatly into the frame. If it's too tight in the frame then the panel will come loose and warp away from the frame in spots. I learned that the hard way and had to redo one .
