I'm new to the Fiero scene (though I havent bought one....yet) and I always here about them catching on fire. Whats that all about? or is there no truth to this?
this is what you got when you bought one after 84......they were recalled and fixed! they have the same chance to catch on fire as do any other 20 year old vehicle....

lack of maintance on a 20 year old car will have some draw backs too, people expect to buy them and act just like a new car
I've known people who didn't take car of their vehicles and beat them and yes they went up in flames. Once you've owned one I think its rather hard to sell it, I owned an 84 and now my 88. I sold my 84 and it was sad to see it go down the road they're addicting cause the mods are endless and they truely are a fun car to drive
Thanks for the information! I'm 31 years old and have owned over 50 cars since I was 16. The one car I have always wanted to get has been a Fiero. My wife thinks this is a bad idea since we have 2 daughters. But when I went to get a Fiero about 2 years ago she shot that idea down and I bought a 5.0 Mustang so we all can ride in it. Well in the 2 years of owning the car we all rode in it together maybe once! So, I sold the car 2 weeks ago and its now time for a Fiero. There's my story, sorry for the long post
First off let me welcome you to PFF and our addiction the Pontiac Fiero. I have 3 kids and I bought my Fiero last April. My kids adore my car. They help me clean it and go with me to cruise nights. My wife just bring the other 2 in our van and we make it a family outing. I am 34 and was like you, it was the car I had wanted for a long time. Find the right one and have a ball with it.

atwrk i am 32 and just purchased my first fiero last monday. what i have been missing!! same as you my wife did not like the 2 seater only deal. but like i said to her, seeing as how we already own a 4 door, why buy another family car when we have one? i am lucky as she is pretty easy going and let it slid. pontiac in my opinion blowed the fiero fire deal out of proportion but only did so to cover their butts from any liability. kinda like ford saying if you buy a ford escort you could be rear ended by a suv. the companies are going to cover their butt

Welcome. My 87GT is my second Fiero my first was a 84 SE that I never had a single problem with.
I"m married with 2 sons, 12 and 7. This car is mine, for me and noone else. I guess it's one of my hobbies or at least thats what I tell my wife. She has hers, I have mine.
Nothing wrong with the 84's or any other Fiero. They just need to be maintained as they are getting older and parts do wear out.
The thing I love about this car is there is so much you can do with it.
This is the way too many people remember Fieros. I bought this car like this, so I'm not sure how it happened, but probably the valve cover leaking on the catalytic converter. Not the best exhaust arrangement, IMO.

I personally think most Fiero owners are biased about the whole fire thing. But I gotta say. I have never seen so many posts about cars catching on fire as I have on the Fiero boards. Despite what people say I have noticed more of a fire hazard with the fiero than other cars. however I think thats just becuase of the mid engine design with the exhaust being very close to all oil containing parts.

Any poorly taken care of car will or can catch on fire. Infact I seen more other cars catch on fire than fieros. Leaking oil or gas can cause any car to catch on fire, fortantly Im a stickler about leaking vechicals and have to keep both my cars leak free ( new home)

The fire stories just refuse to die. I had my car at a cruise night in a nearby town, and I was checking out some other cars nearby. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a father and his kids walking past the Fiero. As they passed, Dad said "These things used to overheat and catch on fire ALL the time!". Looking back, I suppose I could have politely corrected him, but it seemed rude at the time. Oh, well, there's another generation being raised with the Fiero/fire myth.

I also think a lot of fires were simple carelessness. No one is used to storage trunk and engine in the same hood. Ive seen numerous times things like plastic bags, coat sleeves etc, left in the trunk and hanging over right on top of the exhaust manifold. Im doubly carefull to make sure when i put stuff in the trunk, its clear inside the weatherstrip.
