The rear suspention in pre88's is actually the front suspention from a Chevy Citation. They took out the steering rack and bolted the inner tie rod ends to a mount on the cradle

To put it in politically correct terms the idea was of using off the shelf parts was good, but the car they chose from and how they executed the conversion was stupid. I think that GM could have kept the Fiero alive if they started the 84 with the 88 suspention. The rear sus in pre88's makes for many handling problems as far as sports cars go.
The 88's all have the same multi link suspention. The differance between the GT/Formula's and the others is that the GT/Formula's use a rear sway bar, heavier spring rates and a harder compound rubber bushings. They all came factory with poly sway bar end links.
The front suspention on the pre88's are differant too. GM made chages in the entire suspention geometry in 88. The 88 front and rear suspention is MUCH better than pre88's.
GM also put larger vented disc brakes on all 88's that just blow away the old junk that was used on pre88's.
