All these seen time next to my 383 this past summer, and kept for just this occasion.
To be taken apart and inpected for damage.
Only one more left to be taken apart ...a 98 cavalier Izusu This one is going to be interesting too ...
Anyone not familiar with it That's the one that went down the track about twelve times (if memory serves) in one day, scored a 11.9 in the quarter and shift to tell about it.

Tina, do you ever think you'll find a tranny you won't mess up?
I suppose I can answer that- YES (If you drive your Fiero 2 weeks out of the year!!)
I am excited to see your Fiero once again this spring ready to roll for shows and track time, and I will be joining you once my engine swap is done for some 1/4 drags. Oh yeah! Showtime '04 here we come!

I'm on my 4th Isuzu trans in my 88 Coupe (built 3.2L with nitrous) It's always those same gears that goes bad on them! I took my 3 dead transmissions apart a couple mounths ago and thats what I saw. Must be the weak spot I'd say!
Now to find those parts stronger from an aftermarket company.....

Funny.......wise guy.
Let's see if your willing to get a collection here on PFF to get this finished
Tina got herself a new camera. going to reshoot some of these pics tommorow, along wih some pics of the fourth trans.

[b]WHY do you keep using the Izusu tranny ??? I thought that it has been a fact that the Getrag is stronger. Is the gearing that much different? what clutch and PP did you end up likeing the most????
1. Just happen to like 'em better, that, the lower cost and ready availabilty of it. 2. I know everybody keeps saying that, ... put I have yet to see proof of a Getrag next to some HIPO engine (Dyno proof) going thru proven repeated beatings and coming out on top. Before I give up on the Izusu, I like to see how much it can take on a fresh rebuilt and cyro treatment. IMO putting a trans with 80 thou plus miles next to a engine with some serious horsies is nothing more than a crap shoot. Sometimes you win, sometimes you ... Never know where and how that trans has spend the last XXX thousand miles. Heck what am I saying, give my son a hunderd miles with any trans and the poor thing will be on the brink of disinigrating. 3. Only car I ever drove with a V8/Getrag combo was Crazydave's. Didn't feel too much of a difference between the two. (Izusu shifts easier though) 4. Running the upgraded Clutchmaster dual disk set-up and happy with it.

that last one looks like it is brand new (i have never seen a open tranny like that open so i am kinda clueless)
Better clarify ... Last 2 picks posted are from the same 98 Izusu. This trans was just removed from the car, still worked, but I was rather curious what damage the trans actually had incured on our recent trip to the drag strip. (Some 12 runs, numerous high RPM clutch dumps) But since it was a still usuable trans I didn't wanna totally tear it apart. That's why it looks a bit different

Look for the input shaft. The smallest gear will be first the largest will be fifth. Just the opposite on the output shaft. The straight gear is reverse. The input has to turn more time in first, like four to one to turn the wheels, than fifth, which it turns close to one to one.

...does anyone want to speculate what the next "fuse" will be?

My money would be on the left inboard CV Joint, with a milisecond shearing of the axle shaft going into that joint. Of course this will not happen immediately, it takes a few nasty holes shots to stir things up!!!

I did nothing with the tank you got from me. Your on your own.
No biggie ...

P.S. let me know how the swap goes I got a big tank for my car too.
Just doing a straight swap. Gas tank with broken sender out > paint> back in again. BTW I have an extra set of gastank straps for the bigger tank. Yours, if you need 'em.
HitesFiero Never looked the ratios up, but it does appear to be a difference. 5th gear in particular seems to be a bit shorter then the stock Fiero Izusu gearing.

I think she polished the outsides too much, probably trying to win some trophys. Cases got too thin and flexed causing gear misalignment. This led to decreased tooth contact. Which resulted in extremely high loading of the gear teeth and ultimate falure of the gear teeth.

Now the $20,000 question is: What is exactly causing the failures, well besides the enormous amount of power she is putting thru them . I am curious as to if the teeth themselves are not strong enough --or-- the shafts the gears are mounted to are not strong enough thus allowing the gears to repel each other under load --or-- is the case not keeping the shafts from repelling away from each other. You see, under load the gears will try to kick away from each other and more often than not, this is the cause of most failures in manual transmissions. For instance, we all remember the imfamous T-5 that was used in the 3rd gen Camaros and Firebirds. I was informed by someone with vast experience that the gear cluster shafts were pleanty strong but the case of the T-5 is not strong enough to hold the shafts in place. It only takes a couple thousandths of deflection to allow damage to occur. Once damage has occurred, the gears will simply grind themselves up. Thats why I wonder what exactly is going on with tina's isuzus, other than the fact they were designed for 4 cylinders.
