I was walking the yard and came across a 91 Cutlass International. Black with Gray leather, it was nice. Anyway i notice it has the 3.4 DOHC engine, and i am doing a DOHC engine swap, so im looking over the engine to see if there is anything i can use, when i notice a shift nob sticking up between the seats, YES... it had the Getrag 284 trans. Well, i liberated it of the Manual trans, ECM and wire harness. This stuff will work great on my 96 3.4 swap. Anyway I was just so excited, that i needed to share with you, cause my wife just does not get it. OH yea.... i only paid $125 for all of it. Trans, harness, ECM and several small parts.

get some details first mosh. I never buy an engine from a junkyard unless the cars been hit hard anywhere in the back half. If its a nice car with no damage, its in a junk yard for a reason The yard may say its a good motor, but they never drove it so they dont have a clue. Buying off a totalled car is usually fair insurance that motor was good...it was running when it got smashed

Mosh... the think the engine is fried, major oil leak on the rear head, down low. Pulling the trans and parts was not fun. The oil and crap was everywhere. The oil had leaked onto the trans shaft, and made pulling (carrying) it a pain. No idea on the mileage, cause the dash was digital, but the engine did have some new parts on it (alt, belt, oil filter looked new too). But if you needed parts, i left the motor on the ground next to the car, and so you could have it in your truck in 10 minutes. they charge $99.00 per motor with a 30 day refund.

Yea, it would be a great deal, but most of the motors are high milage or have a mech problem. Its a standard U pick it junkyard, the cars stay in the lot for a few weeks, get stripped of anything good and then they crush them. I missed a fiero GT a few weeks ago, its crushed now. There is a fiero or two most of the time. Weird thing is that i have seen 3-4 88's (all coupes) on the lot, a trashed 87 coupe is in there now. They have a few dozen 3800's, 3.1's and Quad 4's all the time. Again if you needed a motor as a replacement it would be great, but the low milage one get taken the day they make it to the lot.

The yard is "U Wrench It" its new, been around for about a year. they have a great set up, clean area, wheel barrels to haul stuff, engine pullers ready to use, its the best yard i have ever been to. All cars are in thier own section, GM, Ford, Mopar and Forgein. They mix trucks in with the cars but that is no biggy. They have a "one price" rule, all engines $99, all trans $70 ect... some are great deals, like when you snag a 454 chevy or 455 Pontiac motor for $99. Little things are dirt cheep, if they dont know what it is, or you have a bunch of small stuff, they charge $1.99 or 5.99 etc... It great. I have "stolen" some great stuff from them. They have no idea what some things are worth. They had a "all you could carry" day, for $29.00. They set up two lines of rope, ten feet apart, all you had to do was carry the item or items that ten feet and you got it for $29.00. I snagged a coupe nose, rear facia, rear taillights, two front fenders and some misc parts. I hauled it all accross the line and got it.
Yes, they have several 4.1, 4.5 and at least two 4.9s in the lot. I looked them over yesterday.
Rob
** Edit - the yard is located in Va Beach, about 3 miles north of the Oceana Naval Air Station - Edit **

does anyone know of a decent yard within driving distance of wash DC? my experience so far, has been that a place in leesburg va, would charge me more for a caddy water inlet than I could get it new from the dealer - and thats if I got to the yard early on a weekday, and removed it myself. jeezuz. I'm currently looking for some misc 4.9L bits (trans dipstick and tube, trans connectors). -john

And for those in Michigan, there is a U-Wrench-It in Kalamazoo also. They just changed to it. Havent been in there lately, but am planning on going to check stuff out soon. I'll have to pay attention for that "all you can carry" day.
