What do you what explained, they are all "Styling Cues" related to the Model Year they were produced for. You can see a styling change as the years progressed which weren't specifically cosmetic, reason for the changes was improved aerodynamics.

For example: what kind of nose is on my car? What is it called?

Well, there were three different basic noses: The aero, the old notchback, and the new notchback. To complicate things further, some notchbacks came with the aero nose, and the Indy aero nose, while appearing identical to the later aero noses, is actually slightly different. Then there's the molding question. The GT aeros game with smooth molding on the corner of the nose, the rest of the aeros came with grooved moldings. So, I think this is a complete listing:

'84-'86 standard nose, not aero, grooved molding integral with nose, blocky black "bumper" pads.
'87-'88 Coupe nose, smooth molding wraps entirely around nose
'84 Aero nose, Indy only, grooved molding, molding was bolted to nose.
'85 Aero, GT, grooved molding integral with nose
'85-'87 Aero, SE/V6 models mostly, integral grooved molding, same as '85 GT. Some 4-cyls are documented with the aero nose, but very, very rare.
'86-'88 Aero, GT only, smooth molding is integral with nose

All of the noses are interchangeable, though the aero looks funny on a non-aero body because of the lack of ground effects.

The nose on your car was developed in GM's wind Tunnel for high speed, and reduced lift. There was a problem with the earlier noses when approaching speeds in excess of 120 mph, the front end would literally lift off the pavement. Some of the very early V8 Conversions that GM was playing with had the early noses and nearly flipped over at GM's proving grounds. Prototype 'Indy' noses were immediately put on those cars.
