What do I have to do to get a rating bar?
Do I have to run around offending people to get bad ratings, or run around and help people to get good ones, or both?

Seriously, what determines whether the rating bar appears or not? Just wondering.

If nobody has an answer, lets experiment. Give me a + and we'll see how many it takes to make it appear. You can take it back later if you want to. I just want to know.

It takes 50 ratings to appear. and like Formula88 said, Cliff doesn't approve or condone rate me threads.

The quickest way to get a ratings bar is to start a flame war against a popular member of the forum Your bar will be flashing red though.

A better way is to spend some time in the tech section helping people.

Or alternatively spend time documenting some aspect of your car that may be useful to other members. Post lots of pictures as the forum likes pictures.

Cliff doesn't mind threads about the rating system in general, but he will close a "rate me" thread.

Yep, more specifically, you have to have 50 ratings from 50 different people since each person can rate you only once. The best way to earn a ratings bar is to earn it. If ratings bars were handed out like candy at halloween they wouldn't be worth much, would they...

It took me almost a year to get mine, I answer questions in tech a lot too, I was surprised it took so long. Then when I did get one I posted something saying how I was excited about getting it and someone re-rated me to neutral and it went away again for a few days! It is easy to get a red one, just go to off topic and rant away. LOL

Remember to rate yourself too

As DotTC mentioned, it takes 50 ratings for the bar to appear, so I assume your question is now answered.
