i just got my second fiero last night. it is a silver 87 fiero GT 2.8L Auto, with 131K no the clock. i picked her up for $800. the interior is immaculate, the body is straight, and the only flaw in the paint is on the wing where the paint cracked.
the engine however hardly runs. it wont ldle very well, the SES, light never goes off, she has hardly any power, the throttle is almost completely unresponsive, and there is a bad vacuum leak somewhere, besause the power brake booster doesnt work well unless the RPM's are high.

Nice car, Ted! One of the things to check for your vacuum leak is the EGR tube, which runs from the EGR valve on the crossover pipe to the underside of the plenum. VERY common on the V6, and can cause at least some of the symptoms you refer to. Congrats...hope you get it running right soon!

hmm power brakes dont work and it wont hardly idle,
Id say vaccum leak on the power brake tube causing the brakes not to work unless thye have alot of vaccum from higher RPMS and the unresponsive idle would be map sensor or TPS (just a guess)
good buy at 800 as long as it runs without a knock.
ive picked gt's up anywhere from 250 bucks to $1000 only one ran when purchased ($400) but was wrecked hard on the front. 800 for that one is a good buy.

WingNut: Now you have money left to work on the motor. i had to save for 3 or 4 weeks to get it and i was still a little short!
litespd: i will examine the egr tube as well than. what is the best way to check it?
m0sh_man: the PO said he checked it and it was good. i intend to do it myself, sence that gut wasnt very knowlegeable. so can i just pull a vacuun on the engine side or...what?
remember guys i know the fiero but i an v6 stupid. i have had a 4-cyl for the last two years.

You'll have to get the car running...as it's running, spray some WD40 under the insulation that covers the EGR tube. If the idle smooths out momentarily, then you've got a cracked tube. That's the easiest way...the best way is to remove the tube and visually inspect it.
Oh...you might have the RPO code for a spoiler from the factory, but Curley's right...that is definitely NOT a factory spoiler.

oh wait by egr tube you guys mean the metal one under the valve? well, than that could very well be it, i noticed a lot of RTV gasket sealer around that area, i will examine it later tonight.

well i pulled the plenum last night and every thing looked OK, but i don't know what it is supposed to look like. the EGR tube looks fine, and i ran water through it with no leaks.
and yes the wing is after market. it has a marking on the bottom that says "RGA model Aero1 made in england" looks great either way, i dont like the wingless look on the GT'S

thesr are some pics i resently took of my two cars together. these pics dont do these cars justice. that GT is immaculate! i cant wait to drive it.
i was tearing out the factory alarm when i took these first few pictures. i am currently saving the money for the engine topend rebuild. the problem ended up being a grenaded valve spring, bent pushrod, and collapsed lifter on the #4 exhaust valve. the cam is also shot.

Good job, Ted! It's amazing just how satisfying doing the job yourself can be! I'm glad to hear you got it running, and I think you'll be better off with the new engine as opposed to repairing the old one. Now, sell the old one for a rebuilder, and get some of your money back!

Not only would I have bought it, I did. I have a silver 86 GT that I picked up for 900, needed more body work than yours but the motor ran good and pulled hard even with 121k on it. For 800 you did real good. BTW 4 miles from me right now there is a maroon 87GT for 800 with a froze up Getrag in it. I have 2 Fieros already and when I mentioned going down to look at that 87 my wife started to crank up so I just looked. I think he would take 6 for it.

Looks like a good buy! I have seen several Fiero's described with your identical running problem symptoms that were easily fixed by replacing the plugged Catalytic Converter. Good Luck with your GT.
