I have a set of 17 x 7 TSW Rib wheels with a 42 mm offset. What size tires would be a good combination to put on these wheels. They will be going on an 88 Gt lowered 1.5 inches all the way around.

On an 88 with identical size wheels I would suggest significantly wider tires on the rear.

On a 17 x 7 I would suggest 235/40 on the rear and 205/45 on the front. Otherwise the rear are going to look too small.

Ideally I think you would want a 245/40 mounted on 17 x 8 in the rear.

that is the size of my rims and on them i have 215/45/17 and 245/45/17. I like the look of a slight rake with the tire a lil bigger on the rear.. just my tastes..

Hey Kameo, what size rims are you running 17x7s all the way around? How does the car handle with having a little bigger tire in the rear on a 7" rim? I didn't know if it really affected it or what. Just kind of curious I really like the look of that and when I need to order some new rear tires Im thinking about maybe getting 245/45/17s now. Let me know bud.

general rule of thumb is tires tread width should equal the rim width. Otherwise you wear out the center or edges instead of evenly. Also if you get it substantially wider than rim, the bead will not be seated properly and hard cornering will roll it off the rim. It will also let the car sidewall flex excessively making the car squirrely.

I have a 88GT with 17x7s. On the front I have 215/45/17s on the back 235/40/17s, I love them. The only thing I might would have done different is 245/40/17s on back (plenty of room). I would not suggest anything bigger than 225s on the front.

yes there 17x7 all the way around. I like the look of a lil taller tire in the rear. It handles ok but the suspension needs tweaked some, an area that I've not touched "yet". There is very lil play in the tires from side to side due to the the fact that they are the highest speed rating you can get.If it had better struts like say Konis it would be great. It also need poly everywhere in the rear. I'm planning on going with coilovers all the way around when i start on the suspension work and i'm told that a 275 series will fit with the room made by the switch. I'm running 285's on my S-10 and there HUGE, So that is what i'm shooting for on the GT 275's on about a 10" rim. (much more research needed to see if this combo will work). If anyone is running something like it on an 88 please let me know.

So you think going with 245/45/17s on a 7" rim is too big? Or would it be okay.

they prefer that it go on an 8" rim. but if you play with your tire pressures you should get even ware, and i've put mine through some tight corners at speeds over 105mph and they handle ok. besides tread width on a 245 is 7.5" so if you have room you should be fine. just get the highest speed rating as you can afford. the higher the speed rating the less side to side movement you will get. mine don't move 1/4" if that. speed rating Y-186mph
