I was at a little garage recently and noticed they have a fuel injection cleaning service. Anyone know if this would be a worthwile thing to get done to my fiero? It runs about 60$.
They run something through the intake I think that causes the car to blow a bunch of smoke out of the exhaust.

Should I get this done when I go in to get some fresh oil?

I have a question does anyone know if those fuel injector cleaners that go into the gas tank really work to clean injectors valves and cumbustion chambers?

I put the STP stuff in my gas tank, engine ran much smoother and more power after. Might have been an extreme case (injectors probably had ~435000 kms on them) but that stuff is Gold in my opinion. If you're going to get your injectors serviced, I've heard nothing but good stuff about this place. Not much more than the shop you were talking about offered.

Just go down to NAPA and pick up a can of BG 44k. I put it in my GP GTP about every 10k miles and it runs like a champ. Also I put about 4 ounces of Marvel Mystery Oil in at every fill up for all of my vehicles.

Mani-Mack,

I recently had this service performed on my 85 base-coupe with 150,000 miles. They hooked up a small canister to the PCV valve (I think) and poured some fuel-injection cleaner into the gas tank, and turned the car on.... BLACK smoke poured out the exhaust... I don't know if it helps, but from the amount of black smoke that poured from the exhaust, I'm sure my Fiero is happy. I also had a radiator flush, and an oil change performed... The car now has new blood flowing through it's veins.

Check you oil, if it's black, have the service performed. If your oil is light, clear, you probably do not need to have the service performed. My oil was very black.

Get:

GM TEC (dealership)

or

Seafoam(NAPA Parts stores)

When used according to the included directions, you will get the same or better results than the tune-up shops "injector cleaning". It will cost you around $15 for the 3 bottles (2 liquid and one spray) that you will need.

If you really want your injectors cleaned, remove them and take them to a fuel injection speciality shop to be ultrasonically cleaned.

I use a bottle of gas tank cleaner every few months. About once a year, I get the spray can and clean out the throttle body too. Ive never had any problems. Did wonders on my 'new' vette. It would barely idle, now smooth as silk.

I try to get the fuel injection cleaning process done to my engine every year no matter the miles I drive.

It costs 100 bux here, but well worth the money. I still get ~36mpg with my stock 2.8 5 spd, and it runs like a champ all the time.

A good fuel system cleaning will clean the injectors, and carbon from the throttle body through to the combustion chambers.

Seafoam works great as a stabilizer also. Each car gets a can and a full tank of gas before going asleep for the winter.

YES. $60 isnt a bad price (esp. can.) The stuff that goes in the tank (like STP) does a decent job. You will be surprised how much happier the motor will feel afterwards.

I was told by a service tech that to often using fuel injector cleaner treatment is not good for them. When I get my injectors done it's about $60-65 and the shop uses a product called Run Rite and it blows the black smoke out the exhaust. Than the tech says to use a product called Techtron for a few tanks of gas. I only get this done every few years.

I have the Sutton injector cleaner that connects to the fuel rail. I run NAPA Pro Clean through it. Have used it for years with no problems.

Well I'm going to be taking off my intake and fuel rail of xmas break. Does anyone out there recommend anything I should buy to clean the throttle body, intake, and injectors, or should i get a shop to do it? Like are there any good ways to get ride of all the black crap (carbon i guess?) off the walls or the intake and such?

This is the best method (by Tesmith66) to clean the injectors. GM even has a part no for the recommended cleaner to use. Basically, you connect a portable pressurize tank of the cleaner to the fuel rail schraeder valve, run the engine and add (open the portable tank valve) of the cleaner to the fuel supply going to the injectors. GM also has a P.N. for the cleaner that you add to the gas tank at fill-ups to maintain the fuel system, but that gets really expensive after a while.
If there are any doubts about the fuel supply, you can have an "Injector Balance Test" done that will let you know their status.

I had this done on my toyota pick-up after owning it several years (about 105,000 miles). I regularly dumped the injector cleaner in tank (about every other fill up or once a month). The difference after this new cleaning was unbelieveable. I felt like the truck was brand new again. I wouldn't do it very often but it is worth it every 50,000 miles or so.

Having the injectors taken out and cleaned by a specialized shop will make an enormous difference. I had the ones done for my van and it the throttle response an fuel economy improvement makes it worth the money spent. It was about 25 bucks (Canadian) per injector. They also have a soda blast cabinet for the fuel rail, throtle body, and intake manifold. Anything aluminum will come out with a satin finish that looks like a new part. No carbon anywhere!!

A definite thing to do if your car has high miles.
