I'm thinking about going from the stock 15" honeycomb to custom 16"-17" I may stay with stock because 17" wheels tend to give a harsher ride due to less sidewall than the stock 60 series tires.
However, I'm open to suggestions so fire away with pictures and sites.

Sounds like you already to the pros and cons figured out. Here is the site I bought my wheels from. If you can find what you like then you can hardly beat the price. I think 35mm is stock, but you won't find many aftermarket wheels (16s or 17s) with that offset. Lots of them are around 40mm, which isn't a huge difference. Just helps tucks the wheel in a bit.

Luckily you have an 87. 40 mm of offset is way too much for the 88 front. Is it just me or is it virtually impossible to find decent looking wheels in the fiero bolt pattern?
Maybe it's just me because I like the old school 5 star wheels and they are getting harder and harder to find in general. I'm ready to have my hubs replaced with a more favorable bolt pattern.

Actually, I was just foolin' around by suggesting to go with 17" five star rims only because that's what I have.
But to answer your question, I wouldn't think there would be any clearance problems with what you mentioned. The width may be the only concern, but even then I can't see that being too wide for rubbing on anything.
Here's a really cool site that will allow you to type in your factory size tires and rims, and then add in your new rim and tire size to see what the overall difference would be. Once you get some numbers, just go out to your car and measure the clearance to see if they'll fit. Hope that helps. http://secret-secret.com/turbo/DIY/tirecalc/turbotire.html

First. be careful comparing offsets, as the numbers are only directly comparable is the width of the rims is identical.
17's will fit without a problem. You would likely want to use 45 series tires, which will add to the harshness of the ride. I just switched to 17's from my stock 15's, and cannot be more pleased. I know the 88's ride a little less harsh to begin with, and I do notice a difference, but its not that big of a difference. I don't mind it at all, and roads around here are not that good. The car also handles much better! I am very pleased!
I was going to go smaller too, but after looking at a lot of pics, decided the 17's just look better, especially with aftermarket rims. To me, the aftermarket 15's especially and 16's just look to small.
For an idea, here is a pic, I have 17X7 35MM back, 45MM front offsets of TSW Apex 5 spoke rims, 215/45 and 225/45 tires front to back.
