Hey guys thinking about a hood vent project. can anyone give me a heads up on what type of dremel is best used for cutting the hood ?

I glanced at a few at teh hardware store and saw different powerlevels and or speeds.

Got any good recommendations ? also what type of wheel would I be using ?

Depends on how much more glass work you're going to do. If you're going to get serious (that is, do quite a bit), I'd recommend you look into getting a Fein Sander. These things are amazing. They're basically the same thing a doctor uses to remove casts. Will cut right through fiberglass, CF, and SMC with a line not much bigger than a razor blade.

If you're just going to do the hood vents, then a Dremel from the harware store will work fine. Use a jigsaw with a metal blade to cut the opening and mask the outside of the opening with masking tape to keep from scratching.

Seriously, if anyone is really going to do a lot of FG work, you need to use a Fein sometime. You'll never be without it again.

I used a regular like Dremel brand... Dremel. Used the diamond cutting wheel which cut through the hood like butter, didnt even damage the paint in anyway, then i used the sanding drums to smooth it out a little

oh and when you do it, make sure to where some kind of mask over your mouth and eye protection, white dust goes everwhere!

Are there any other tips I need to know as I am cutting ? Do i need to hold the dremel at an angle while cutting the vents ?

Is there a possibility of the glass getting too hot while cutting ??

Yes, you can melt the glass as you cut through it. In fact, if you have the powerful 35,000 RPM dremel you can get the plastic so hot that it melts and solidifies behind the wheel and you will have to cut it again. So my advise is to take it slow and easy.
