Dang i just read his post, that coulda been one huge mess if it woulda come apart at speed. I've seen rims cracked along the width of it but never like that b4, its just nasty.

Look at the tire he has on the rim. This shows the danger of going to a big wheel and a low series tire. He hit a big pothole and had that low series tire so there wasn't much tire to absorb the blow so the rim took the force of the hit. I don't think the rim is as much at fault as the tire size choice he made. He is lucky if he didn't damage a lot more parts.
Here is another picture to show how small the tire is.

I saw the pic and was horrified! I read the post and laughed! "It's supposed to bend, right?" LOL They were blaming it on the manufacturer. Cast materials are not real good about bending. Heat-warp, yes. Bending from severe impact, no. They will bust or crack just like any other cast material. Bang your valve cover with a hammer and see if it "bends". Classic. Notice the guy said he rode on it some more AFTER hitting a guard rail. In my mind, I picture a large impact crack that spread around the wheel as he rolled on it after impact with the pothole.
I am glad the guy and his girl were not injured. This should be a reminder to all who have big cast aluminum rims and low-pro tires, REGARDLESS OF BRAND.

I have to agree with johnt671. That's why I have decided to stick with the stock 15" Honeycomb rims for my GT. BTW how fast were you going and how big was the hole/bump? As stated above the bigger the rim the less tire/sidewall is there to absorb bumps before the shock actually gets to you and the rim.

I agree with the above post about having a large diameter wheel with very low profile tires. The impact force to the wheel rises conciderably with lower profile tires. And with extreme combos (20" wheels with 35 profile tires) your just asking for trouble. Your pretty close to just driving on the rim at that point!
I'm amazed you don't hear more stories like this. Especially with some of these large/heavy vehicles (H2's, Suburbans, Tahoes, etc) that people are putting 20" wheels on. The stress placed on the wheels in those applications are huge!
The size of the rim is not entirely at fault. He hit that pothole and it cracked, so ke kept driving with a flat tire and that put a ton more stress which made the crack travel untill it made its way around. I do agree that puttin those small tires is bad but if you do your research you can come up with a good 17 or 18 combo. Look at the rims and tires im getting, 18 inch wheels and a 25" tall profile, that leaves around 3 inchs of sidewall.
------------------ N*,13" stoppers, 18s, completely rebuilt, oh yea and this:

As stated in my first post these are not my wheels, I just thought it would be nice to post so that people who have large wheels and low profile tires know to be careful.
