Hey guys, my clutch is starting to slip in my 87 gt. I was wondering about how much it will cost me to replace my clutch. My buddy is a mechanic but doesn't have a lift he can use. Is it possible to do it on the ground? And one more thing, do I have the isuzu getrag or the muncie tranny? Thanks guys in advance.

I went to the pontiac dealer for the same problem 4 or 5 months ago. He wanted 2300$ (Canadian) for parts and labour (gm parts). He could also do the job for 1600$ canadian using midas parts (but would not warrenty the parts only the labour.

I contacted Mister Transmission and they were willing to do it for 1000$ canadian, so I was pretty happy (that included replacing 2 mounts that were really crappy and fixing a small oil leak somewhere near the firewall.).

Hope this helps.

Ed Parks Website has a great, "easy" way using a 2x4.

yes it's possible. i pulled my engine both with and without tranny with a comealong and some lumber. most people will say it's easier to drop the cradle, i cant say. ive got some pics of the out-the-top procedure at the link in my sig. you will save a bunch of money if you do it yourself.

If it's still the tranny it came with from the factory, you've got the Getrag. The "Muncie", as it's usually called, is the 4 speed. Actually, Muncie builds both the 4 speed, and also the Getrag 5 speed under license from Getrag. The Isuzu 5 speed was only found in 4 cylinder cars...of course, some have been swapped into other cars by now.

It cost me $135 for a new performance clutch with new pressure plate and throw-out bearing; then 7 hours of work later, done.

The book calls for 13 hours but I've done so many it's like sleep walking.

You don't NEED a car lift. Jack stands will work fine but make sure you have a good floor jack with at least 15 inches of lift and put the jack stands on the large steel braces under the car in front of the k-frame.

I once took a Fiero to Clutch mart. Spent $500, and got a tranny with crushed axle seals for my trouble. Didn't get 20 miles before the tranny dried-up completely. I've never trusted anyone to a clutch for me since.

Everything he said! It's not a simple job but if you have moderate mechanical skills, a good book, and someone to hand you wrenches, you should be able to do it yourself in a day or so.
Mine was $145 including resurfacing the flywheel. I wouldn't bother doing a clutch without having the flywheel machined. Also expect problems with the hydraulic slave cylinder since it's probably full of rust. I was lucky and just honed mine out.

I'm doing the clutch in my 88GT right now. We are using the "out the side" method, removing the suspension from the driver's side, swinging the cradle down and pulling the transmission out the side. Without a lift, this is probably easier that dropping the crade. With a lift, dropping the cradle seems fairly easy (I've done it that way, too).

If anyone knows where I can get a 2nd design Getrag clutch fork (88) for less than $187 (including shipping), let me know.

Getting a Fiero clutch replaced at a shop - $1200-1500.

Buying a high performance dual-friction Centerforce clutch from V8 Archie - roughly $400.

Installing said clutch yourself - $0.

Barking 2nd gear on command - priceless.
