I'm really looking into selling my '84 Mazda RX-7 and buying a Fiero (85 GT prolly), but everyone that hears I want to get a Fiero immediately says, "Oh, those are the worst cars ever made." or, "You don't want to drive a piece of crap like that...".
Everyone I talk to says that they were horrible cars, and very poorly manufactured.
Why such a bad reputation? Looking at the Fieros of the board members, and how easy it is to upgrade, mod, and work on a Fiero, how can they be such horrible cars? Everyone is trying to talk me out of it, but after seeing Adam's red 85 Gt notchback, I just have to have one. And I can't believe the fuel economy they get! My rx-7 gets 14 MPG. 14! Sure it's rotary and pretty quick, but a V6 Fiero has better 0-60 and 1/4 mile times than my car. But I don't want one for speed, I want one because they are freakin' cool cars. I just don't understand why everyone I talk to thinks they are horrible.

I heard the same stories, do what your instincts tell you, I bought an 85GT for $900 bucks just got it painted at maaco for 350 bucks and now I blew a main rod bearing, my parents said you should sell it, I was like hahahahaha you are funny right? sell my fiero? hahahaha once you get them no matter what kinda trouble they put you through you will love them =) So the car has given me no problems for the past 6 months of having it, now Im putting about 1200 bucks into getting a new 2.8 and souping it up, mind you Im only 18 thats why Its not a 350 Swap =) Once you go Fiero you never go back, make sure its the right decision, and get rid of that rotary POS =P lol Good Luck dude, Go with the Fiero all the way

Maybe it was the whole starting-on-fire issue, but I really don't care anymore.
I'm saving up $2500 (that's including the selling price of the RX-7; I'm not rich, mind you) to by a nice fiero; I'm not keen on the restoration yet, maybe when I get older, but for now I think I just want to buy one that needs little to no work.
I still can't get over how inexpensive this car is. It's one of the nicest cars I've seen or read about, and parts are fairly cheap and readily available, mods are endless and simple, and they are pretty quick around the twisties. True American sport.
Man... I still can't get over how nice your 85 GT looks in your sig Arizona. Sweet indeed. I like how the paint looks dark red like that. Very nice. 85's were the only GTs that were notchback, right? All the other notchbacks are SE's?
Is there much of a performance difference between an 85 GT and an 85-87(or whatever year they stopped) SE or coupe? Did the 85 GT have speakers in the headrest? And I was wondering, for those with speakers there, how does it sound?
Sorry for the barrage of questions; I'm so interested and eager to get a Fiero of my own

1. Yes, 85' was the only notchback GT made. The only other aero nosed notchies (like the 85' GT) are the 86-87' SE and the 84' Indy Pace Car.
2. There is no performance difference between a GT and a SE V6, except for a stiffer suspension. As far as acceleration/power goes, they're the same. A GT (or any V6 Fiero) is much faster than an SE 4cyl. or coupe. Not to say the coupes aren't fun, because they are, but they're just not as fast. Oh, and production stopped in 1988.
3. Yep, 85' GTs have the headrest speakers. They sound very cool, the ones in my 84' SE had pretty good sound quality, and they were the original speakers.
$2500 should get you a very nice GT, good luck in your search!

My RX-7 is coming back from the rotary mechanic for a tune-up, then I'm going to Armor All the heck out of it, then sell that baby!
What do you think is a reasonable price? It's '84, and [excellent] condition. Pioneer CD and 4 new Pioneer speakers, ALL documentation of everything done, and about 9 or 10 $1000+ tune ups done throughout it's life. I'm thinking maybe $1800 or possibly $2000. Too high?
The more I can sell it for, the sooner I can get a Fiero, lol.

$2000 Sounds reasonable, and the 85 GT's are awesome, I cant wait to get my engine swapped, I dont know much about the performance changed, I know in 88 they fixed the oil delivery better, and it has a way better suspension, Im new to the fiero as you are, and you say you arent to old, do you mind me asking your age? and the speakers in the headrest sound GREAT =) Im 18 so I blare mine all the time and they are stock in the headrests, the 4x10's in the dash are from Radio Shack and working perfectly I have an aftermarket JVC deck, I would install subs, but im big on racing 1/4 mile so I need the less weight in the cab =), AND NEVER LET anyone shy you away from the fiero, mine hasnt had any of the recalls done to it, maybe thats why it took a crap, I think it was poor maintence by the previous owner, but my baby should be roaring soon, and the color is only dark cause I took it at Sunset it is really Candy Apple Red =) by the way my name is Adam too =)

How does it go? Once you go Fireo you never go back? maybe it was some other saying? but it still applies. They are the cars that where way ahead of their time. I allways say don't knock it before you try it!!

Rumor spreading, mostly. Those people don't really know what they are talking about.
Only had ONE mechanic have a legitimate beef about the car (that didn't like them in the first place). And that was that the suspension in pre-88 cars was weird and not terribly well set up. And that the front end flexes too much to be any good for real hard driving/racing. On these points, I have to agree...
But then again, for a street car, it's friggin' awsome! And for the short-comings, there's always a healthy AFTERMARKET!
Just look around the site. See what potential these cars have. My 87 se was a POS and I always had some Sh^T talked about it. Now that my 87 GT is fxed up, I always have people saying "well, thats sweet fiero." but you will never stop hearing from the bone heads who "know it all" A car is what you make of it. Not to diss nocthbacks, but if you can I would pick up a GT, there just a little more sexy.

Remember... the more people that are ignorant about just what great cars Fieros actually are, the lower prices will remain for those of us who know better.

People like to diss what they dont understand. Dont worry. The only person you have to worry about is yourself in the choice you make with what car you want. Everyone else can go F themselves.

The 85-86 2.8 was rated to have the highest stock HP at 140 compared to 135 all the other years. I like my 86SE better than my 85Gt sort of. The headrest speakers are nice especially when you're riding with the windows down. But I also like the extra gauges for the volts and Oil pressure. Other than those 2 things there are no differences.

The bad rep has a lot to do with the early engine fires and some minor engineering flaws like the crappy distributors, etc.
As for design and manufacture, the Fiero was one of the most advanced design and best manufactured cars of it's day. So much so that it won countless awards and was honored with INDY 500 Honors.
Consumer Guide rated it as one of the SAFEST cars on the road too.
Since the car had little support from it's own maker (GM specifically, not Pontiac) the idea of the car as a dud was founded...unfairly BTW.

SHHHHHHHH! Don't give away the Fiero secret or the prices will go up!
I think it's mostly hearsay that gives people a bad image about the Fiero. I don't even argue the point any more. I just tell them that it's people like them that keep the prices own Rob D.
