can't claim any aerodynamic benfits, but i have one i like on my fastback. it's for a mid-late 90's mustang. the wings west version is called a california high wing. my pic ability comes and goes, but i posted a pic when i first tried it. had to play with the tilt some, more for my own sence of aesthetics than improve aerodynamics (it looked like it was leaning backwards a little to me). if i can't find a pic, it looks sort of like the modded fiero wing on the purple pavement eater.
the only thing i know aerodynamicly is observation.it seems just high enough that when it rains, rain blows off the top but just about sits still on the bottom. i can't really say i know what that means.

I mounted an apache rear wing by JSP fits nicely, adjustable and not too big. Haven't quite figured out this hole picture posting thing out so no pictures yet.

As said above, good luck finding one, this is stock shape with no modification. "Wicker Strip" can be added to entire back edge for even more downforce if one were enclined to race it.
I saw that in the "Big Fiero book" I was looking at last night. I think IRM had it for sale (maybe FOCOA) for $369.
Wonder if they still have them?
David
Thanks David, IRM made the part, and rumor has it that they are getting out (or have gotten out) of the Fiero Parts business. It's a 'glass' copy of the original whale tail that was used on race cars.
Yep, those are some antlers all right. I like the whaletail look best so far. On the coupe I like the IMSA rear spoiler best.
Does the wing do anything on a GT?
David
Thanks for the compliment Dave. As to your question and also adding to what California said. I took mine out last summer and did some Solo I and I had an instructor who was following me tell me that the back end looked very well planted and to me it felt very stable. The car is stock except for a rear sway bar. It was also my first time out in the Fiero.
Oh I forgot this part. I actually found mine on Ebay. I was really lucky because I got mine for only $200.00 and that was for the whole rear deck not just the wing. I have also seen just the wings or "tails" by themselves on Ebay.

i've since changed the tilt some, but haven't painted it yet. i think i've found a better way to tilt it so i guess i'll try that before paint.
you just said fastbacks but if you look for coupe wings the older generation mustang wings (the coupe/convertible ones) fit them pretty well. i have a saleen on my coupe and a f-40 on another project from that era.

I'm looking for one for my notchback. I don't like the high-rise wings nor the sheetmetal looking ones either. I love the whale/drag/duck tail like gargoyle or California Kid posted. I also like the low slung wings like the third generation stock Camaro Z28 wing or like the one sloth85GT posted.
I was considering these two, both are Wings West wings, I was wondering if someone had some different angle pics of these wings:

I'm wondering about something active, akin to what the newer Porsches have, that rises as speed increases. The Corrado had one too. My thoughts are low profile, so I guess maybe it's technically a spoiler??
WMac probably has the only aftermarket wing i believe looks good on a fastback, blends in smooth, its suddel andjust the right height.
Does anybody have pictures of a stock wing moved back? I never saw that before

I am really partial to the whaletail look of Cali Kid's wing and gargoyle's wing. I also liked the subtle wing on WMac's machine. I think I am going nuts with all the possibilities!

A motorized wing can be accomplished, but it would take a good deal of electrical expertise. In basic form, you would need a wing to start out with, perferably one of those tall wings so you don't have to fabricate any fiberglass or metal to lengthen it. Design or find two motors that would work on a track setup, have the wing set on the track. You can then run some wires from the motors to your dash for a switch to raise or lower the wing. Having it auto raise and lower based on speed will be a whole other game.
It's a nice idea, but too much for me to take on

I noticed that after I raised the wing off the deck (4 1/2"), dew and rain drops blow cleanly off at around 50mph. Doesn't that show that there is downforce being applied? Isn't that functional?

All it means is that you now have the look you want and rains drops blow off above 50. In order to understand what you can't see, it takes a wind tunnel and smoke streams to actually see what's happening to all the air as it passes over the rear and back of the car.
Function has always been a debatable topic here on the forum, however GM did do alot of Wind Tunnel testing on the Fiero, and I'm sure they picked the right height to place it. What you get after you change the position or angle is anybodies best guess.
The same goes for aftermarket spoilers, nearly all have never been wind tunnel tested on a Fiero, so you're buying cosmetics which more than likely will negatively affect your vehicle performance. There's a fine line between Lift, Downforce, Resistance, Turbulance, Backwash, etc. That's why race teams rely on the services of a car manufacturer to determine the best setups in their multi-million dollars wind tunnels. Too much downforce/drag will destroy performance in terms of speed / fuel economy making it less competative.
