Here is the GETRAG low-down.
The MG-282 was originally conceived and designed for the Pontiac 6000-STE and a few other FWD cars. Coincidentally it fit nicely into the Fiero and since consumers had been complaining about the original 4-speed gearbox since day 1, Fiero execs jumped on the bandwagon. The bad news was that development at Getrag took a long time and the Tranny would not be available until June 1986 for introduction into the LAST FEW 1986 GT models produced in June, July, and August of that year. These car are often refered to as 1986 1/2 models. The Getrag was the standard tranny for the V-6 Fiero through the rest of it's production with NO variation in the design. An '86 1/2 MG-282 will bolt into an '87 or '88 with no mods.
Synchronizer problems pushed development out to 18 months, 6 months longer than planned. Pontiac sublet the manufacture of the Getrag design to Muncie, hence the Muncie/Getrag name.
In 1986, 28.6% of the Fieros produced included a 5-speed (getrag and Isuzu combined). that ia 24,017. Since there were only 17,660 GTs built in 1986 I estimate that only 5,050 '86 Fieros had Getrags.
In 1987, 45.4% of Fieros came with 5-speeds. That come out to 21,148 5-speeds total. There were 3875 SE models and 15,968 models with V-6 engines so we are looking at an estimated 9,009 Getrags in '87
And in 1988, 52.4% of all Fieros came with 5-speeds. 6848 GTs and 5475 Formulas totalling 6457 Getrags for that year.
Grand total = estimated 20,516 Getrags found their way into Fieros.
